This is my first post on here. I'm a transplant from the northwest. I'm wondering if it's possible to get over the counter public land tags for hunting down here. After my last hunting season, I'm inclined to go back to the public land, spot and stalk I grew up with and was hoping y'all might be able to point me in the right direction. I live west of Fort Worth, but am interested in hunting the pan handle or Big Bend area of the state for deer or bear. Any information you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for letting me become a part of the forums =)

It would appear public land, big game tags aren't available for north/west Texas - at least that I'm able to locate...
*let me amend that statement - modern firearm, big game tags aren't available*

Annual hunting permit is $48. Get that and they will mail you a book with all the maps of where you can hunt and what species can be hunted on each property. I dont believe any bear is legal in tx...could be wrong. Youll still need your regular hunting license. If suggest a super combo if you fish fresh and salt too. Then just need your HIP, and federal migratory bird/duck stamp and youre good to go all year.

Yea, bear are protected in Texas. Now I've hunted bare before, but I got cold.

*let me amend that statement - modern firearm, big game tags aren't available* The tags come attached to your licence. No separate tags.

If you want a public land area in the panhandle that you can just roam around western style, check out Lake Meridith. You can hunt mule deer and whitetails with a rifle. No drawing required, but it can get a little crowded on the weekend. No special tags, just use the ones attached to your licence. Here's some info. https://www.nps.gov/lamr/planyourvisit/hunting.htm
