I'll about 60-80 yards from the fence line of about 5k acres that isn't really hunted and I'm wondering you guys opinion. This year a decided to shoot my 30.06 instead of my 270 in hopes knock down power. My question to you guys is this. What is your favorite bullet for dropping in Johnny on the spot. I know I know, shot placement is everything some say but I believe and know that bullet quality is just as important. I do not want to take a chance of loosing the biggest buck of my life over the fence or have to drag one that far by myself either.

A vitals shot never guarantees a DRT shot. Bullet isn't especially important either. What is important is shot placement. If you use the high shoulder shot they are almost guaranteed to drop in their teacks. There is a long thread about it let me find it and I'll get ya a link. This shot can easily be done with the 270 as well.

My opinion - ballistic numbers aside, there is virtually no difference in "killing power", whatever that is, between a 270 and 30-06. The few hundred pounds of force between those rounds at distance is negligible on a thin skinned animal like a deer.
It is FAR more important to have good placement.
Bullet choice can also make a difference, but is mostly counter intuitive. Assuming a heart/lung perfect shot, what will drop an animal more quickly in their tracks is the rapid hydrostatic shock. Several bullets are designed to do this, but it's not the more solid penetrating rounds. Bullets that more rapidly and fully transfer the energy from the projectile into the animal will cause the most damage and hydro shock. These are almost always frangible bullets like Berger or other ballistic tips. In this case, you DONT want a passthru - you want a bullet that virtually explodes.
But there a number of issues with such rounds, and most folks - even some knowledgeable ones - will talk bad about them and try to convince you that it just isn't so. They'd be wrong. But there ARE issues with these rounds - they damage meat, are sometimes inconsistent, and some may fragment on impact. Berger bullets are excellent though, I am sold on them.
But rather than playing with bullets or going big - the best advice I would give is use a rifle you are very good with and get even better. Practice. My daughter, for example, is found of neck shots and she is very good. She severs the spine and breaks neck and the animal simply falls over without a step, every time. Provided you make a good shot. She shoots a .270 with 150gr Fusion
That being said, I also know a older gentleman that drops his deer in a similar manner and he shoots a .243 and sometimes a 7mm-08!!!
Of course, while heart/lung shots are the easiest and most common, I once helped track a freaking WT doe for 600 yards that basically had no heart (almost liquidified) after being big shot at 110 yards with a .300 WinMag.
So go figure.
I hunt a small property with a-hole, anti hunting neighbors. I MUST drop my animals, especially the big axis, before they can go the 80 yards to the fence. I have been known to take my .375 H&H and bust them in the running gear Lol.

Where do you guys think the best shot placement is to drop them in there tracks. I shot a buck last year through both lungs with a 100grain centex bullet and the bullet passed straight through. With that said I had to drag that buck 300 yards in the soupy mud. I almost died lol. That led to why I am asking this now, because I don't want to face this again. If I have a monster buck that is freak mcnasty in front of me, I'm not scared to say that I don't care about the shoulder meat and want him to stay right where I shoot him.

The high shoulder shot is the only way i have found to drop one in its tracks.

Barring a headshot, which I am not a fan of and would obviously ruin a trophy, a neck/high shoulder shot that breaks neck or severe spine and the animal will fall over dead without taking a step. But if you aren't comfortable with that shot, then a shoulder shot that takes out one or both legs will likely pin the animal to a spot and allow a second shot if needed.
But percentage wise, for most hunters - including myself - a good well placed heart/lung shot will, is the safest, highest percentage clean kill and won't go very far - you might lose one over the fence now and then - that's the way it goes. But it still the time-tested, tried and true kill shot. If you aren't comfortable and well practiced on neck/high shoulder shots, I'd stick with the basics.
If the buck of a lifetime walks out, trust me, it is NOT the time to try a neck or other shot that you are not absolutely confident in taking

Thinking back over the years, most deer I shot that didn't drop usually ran in the direction they were facing, as long as they weren't facing me and the sound of the rifle. So, wait till they are facing away from that dreaded fence line.

.243 you can shoot accurately will do you as good a job anchoring a buck.

I can shoot really well. Do shot placenment is not of my concern. I can put it where it needs to go, just need to know where that neck or high shoulder shot should go.

Why not hunt the interior of your property where you don't have to worry about the deer getting over the fence?

Cause the deer are bigger on the other side of the fence! At least that's what guys next to my lease think.

Why not hunt the interior of your property where you don't have to worry about the deer getting over the fence? I agree with this. If you have a feeder to draw the deer in move it about 200 yards into your property. Deer are capable of walking that much farther.

I generally try to allow a few hundred yards between blinds and property lines as well, however, I am very limited in acceptable tripod placement options (bow) at my current lease. I finally settled on a spot about 100 yards from a fence. Since this stand will be strictly bow hunting, I too have to deal with the very real possibility that even a good shot will result in tracking across property lines. I am fortunate in that neighbors are good folks, however, if that weren't the case, I have not met a game warden that would not be willing to facilitate the track for a hunter that handled themselves appropriately. I'm sure there are some that would rather not deal with that situation, but it's part of their job and 99% of them are more than happy to go above and beyond to help us out.

Guys I get where you are coming from. Unfortunately on this track of land the layout doesn't permit this. If you set your feeder dead center of the property it will still only be 150 yards from a fence like. I'm trying to hunt in a way to give the absolute best chances of making a mature buck feel comfortable. And by that I'm hunting even a spot that I necessarily don't prefer. This track is long and narrow

Oh and I read the other post. Thanks for that info, that was extremely helpful and in 15 years of deer hunting, I've never had it explained like that. I'm still interested in which bullet you guys prefer?

Anything Federal makes in a big game load will bring an animal down in it's tracks if placed correctly with the high shoulder shot. Reloaders always have their own brew.

I have Chad from Dallas Reloads make me up 168 Amax (.308) I don't know how many pigs I have shot in the last two years and 2 deer, haven't looked for one. As far as I can tell, it's as good as the Hornady that I used before... He sells them in a box of 100 rds at a time....always worth talking to him about bullets, he is wealth of knowledge. And no he didn't pay me to say this, I just appreciate him answering my stupid questions from time to time...

150grn remington corelokt in 30.06 has never let me down out to 196 yards. Haven't shot it passed that. It really didn't matter where I hit them from the liver to the neck, they drop. My .270 i like a 130grn round corelokt. I've had a few deer run 20 or 30 yrds none to much further than that.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Sounds like you're on a very small tract of land Sunset. Have you checked your county regs to be sure it's legal to hunt? A lot of counties have gone to 10 acre minimum for gun hunting. http://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoo...eas-in-counties
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.
