This will be the "second go-round" for Gander Mountain. For, in 1995 G/M had filed Chapt. 11 bankruptcy, which allows the debtor to continue operations while it attempts to reorganize its debts with its creditors. The bankruptcy was discharged shortly after Cabelas bought the mail-order division from G/M, and by G/M also selling off many of their store locations. But the cash infusion by Cabelas from the sale of the catalog, mail-order, division enabled G/M to remain in operation.

In early 1995, with sales decreasing, and Gander Mountain cash needs exceeding the amount of money both from sales and its credit arrangements with banks, the company decided to sell selected catalog assets to Cabela, Inc., a large catalog marketer of hunting, fishing, and camping equipment located in Sidney, Nebraska. For $35 million, Cabela purchased Gander Mountain's customer list and selected inventory. Still, the company was losing money and unable to meet its debts. As a result, after lengthy negotiations throughout 1996, Gander Mountain management decided to file a joint plan of reorganization under chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Court. This plan included the sale of 12 of the company's 17 stores to Holiday Companies, a retail sports store operator, and the agreement to pay Holiday back for the stores when Gander regained its financial health and resumed operations. Until that time, the stores acquired by Holiday would operate under the Gander Mountain name.

At the beginning of 1997, Gander Mountain management, in close cooperation with the executive team from Holiday Companies, were working to bring Gander Mountain back to operation. Whether or not this could be done depended on Gander Mountain management's ability to recapture the highly specialized niche market that it so carelessly had squandered away.

the Gander in COrsicana is sell off all ATVs, ATV Accessories, and Boats. They will no longer carry ANYTHING in either category. I talked to the store manager about this issue. I was trying to return an ATV accessory that would not work on my rig and he said he cannot take it because "all of that stuff" was being discontinued.

that is the only place where Gander does have an advantage, the select few avid bow hunters in this world are better served in Bow hunting at Gander mtn vs. than at Academy, whereas shooters, campers, swimmers, athletes, fishers, people who wear cloths, boaters, people who wear shoes, are all better served at Academy...

thats all I get....an agree to disagree....show be a better value at gander mountain, I'm all ears...we went to GM in Tyler and they had 6v batteries were 14.99 (Energizer) and at academy 7.99....wow! looked at a pair of snake boots 129 at GM were 99 at academy...ammo-not even gonna go there, I really tried to like GM, they have a lot of products I like, tons of guns, great selection of guns, but every stinkin one is at least 20% overpriced...tell me where they are a beter valuse than academy, with the exception of Archery...not that they have any steals on Archery but do have a decent pro shop and a range

more variety on product, when they have sells or coupons prcies are better at gander.

bought a stradic 2500 on a shimano lightweight rod for $75 on saturday...i couldnt steal that rig for so cheap!

Gander has higher prices yes, but hey also have (AT SOME STORES) more knowledgable employees, better selection and for the most part nicer equipment. Equipment is IMO but i like the scaling from low to high quality at gander in optics/guns/bows/fishing...and I think the service is better.

I buy most of my guns at Academy cause I can find the cheaper of course..but i look at them, handle them, and discuss them at gander *then run across the street to buy at academy*

Academy usually has better deals on tackle, especially lures..but gander has a better and wider selection and Id rather have the right/good stuff and then cheap stuff...

remember this is just my opinion!

Well we agree to agree then....on rare occasion with a clearance or a blowout sale I'd buy at GM...before academy came to tyler I'd go find what I wanted and look at GM then either go get it at walmart or order it online and 99% of the time it was cheaper. We went and looked at 4 wheeler tires and rims there, then bought them for 1/2 online, with free shipping of course!

I like Gander here in Lubbock because they carry a lot of stuff that you can't get anywhere here. Their gun prices have come down and are just as competitive as anyone else around here. Ammo is high though. Any given day there will be 3 to 4 times as many cars at Academy.

All the talk of high prices. The Sherman store price matches any competitors price. All you have to do is prove that you can buy the same thing at BPS, Cabelas, Academy, or Walmart cheaper and the will match the price. There are signs hung all over the store advertising this.

I personally think that sportsmans and GM are getting hurt bad by Academy. Its hard to beat Academy prices...Escpecially in fishing...No comparison.

About the only reason I go in the Sherman store is to kill time. Beef Jerky is about the only thing I've actually bought there.

When the 450 Marlin first came out, I thought I had to have one. I went to the Sherman Gander Mtn and sure enough, they had a stainless rifle. I wanted to look at the cartridge so I scoured the ammo. Nothing. I asked one of their "salesmen" to help me look and he said "Oh, we don't carry the ammo". I asked him why they would sell the rifle and not the ammo. His answer? "This place is run by a bunch of Yankees. Nothing they do makes sense". FINALLY! An honest answer!

To be fair, GM isn't the only place that does dumb stuff like that. I went to the Foxworth Galbraith in Whitesboro to but some 5" sanding pads for my Dewalt sander. They sell the sander but not the sanding pads. No word on who runs that Company.

Yeah PH....I run into the same situations! I think sometimes the corporate buyers fail to get linked up with the parts & accessory side of a product, or when they finally get the price they want for a product in order to carry it in stock, they have to "concede" the need for parts and accessories in order to get that price!

I know the Academy buyers have to contract at least a year to 18 months in advance on some of the new products, or even more, on other products. Too often, the parts and accessories lag way behind, and is due in part so that the sales analysis can be reviewed.

It's all about sales per square foot, and if they bring in a new product that doesn't sell, and there is also the parts and accessories that go with it....and they don't sell....then a lot of space has been tied up for a DUD!

I think that was one of Gander's problems! They had this tremendous floor space tied up for inside boat displays which was not cost productive at all.

no secret they will price match, so will wal-mart, my wife takes adds from all the grocery stores and goes to wal-mart and get all the sales while getting walmarts low prices on everything else....HOWEVER, in the case of GM price matching when I'm probly not going to find anything cheaper there why wouldn't I just go to BPS, Cabellas, or Academy and buy the cheaper item instead of proving to GM that its cheaper somewhere else...

Bingo! Give that man a cigar! I don't undrstand why GM thinks price matching is such a big deal. If a box of ammo cost $20 at Wal-Mart and I know it's going to cost $35 at GM, why waste the gas and time to go to GM? Just buy it at Wal-Mart (or Academy). GM has a better selection? There goes the price match. Don't have to match what somebody else doesn't carry.

alright guys well as a Gander Mountain bow tech working in the sugar land store i can tell y'all now that all the talk about us closing is rumors of the consumer. i wish i could show you sales reports of some of our stores and show how that we are actually MAKING money instead of losing money. as for the overpriced debate i can see some areas where i would agree on but its just like every other store: you can get a good buy with someone else and we be overpriced but on other items you get a good buy with us and bad somewhere else, it all depends on what your looking at. also alot of people dont know but WE PRICE MATCH! telling someone at gander that you bought it for a few bucks cheaper elsewhere will almost always give it to you for that price. the only thing that i can see us being too highly priced is our ammo but if yall dont know then now you do, thats not our decision. the manufacturers have been raising their prices due to demand and in return it effects both you the consumer and us the retailer.

if yall have any more questions or hear anymore rumors talk to me, i can probly clue you in much better than what you hear on the street

another argument im seeing is that academy is better than gander mainly on prices...agreed (also like i said, gander price matches)...but what if you want professional advice. most people that work at academy are there to just get a paycheck. people that work at gander are there because thats what we do, we're put into departments that we are able to give professional advice on. i cant tell you how many times i go into academy and ask questions and get the most dumbfounded look on the face of the employee. if you want expertise and valued advice and knowledge, go to gander. I used to be the Archery Manager in the Sugarland Store along with Lance who now is the firearm manager, if im not mistaken... No I dont think gander is goin anywhere, too much "old money" if you know that i mean... Yeah there high priced as hell but you spend enough money in there and show that you are a returning/committed customer, meet some of the manager and they will/have the permission to do a 10% discount... you scratch a back and someone will scratch yours...

also alot of people dont know but WE PRICE MATCH!

Since you are an employee at one of their stores, I cannot debate about how your store matches price. Being a wannabe Consumer at the Sherman store I CAN tell you how they price match.

They will match the price of any store IF the product is identical (no problem there) and IF the other store has the exact same product in stock at that exact time. If Wal-Mart Blazer Brass is $12/box but out of stock and Gander Mountain is $25/box on the shelf, they don't match prices. Now, a good argument could be made for that being a sound business call. But an equally good argument can be made that they are using bait-and-switch because they know Wal-Mart won't have any on the shelf.

Wal-mart doesn't have any on the shelf because their price is low. Gander Mountain has it on the shelf because their price is high. So for the most part, the price match is a shell game. Gander knows that the odds are remote that you'll have anything to match against them. Why?

It's a vicious circle.

Again, at the Sherman Gander Moutain, a used rifle will cost at east 25% more than the exact same new rifle at Academy. I must adimt I haven't asked them to price match a firearm. Has anyone asked them that question? I did ask about trading in a used firearm towards the purchase of a new one. The guy told me that they have book that tells them what to offer for the trade-in. They have no latitude there. He told me that most people get mad and walk out when they try to trade a gun in so he advised me to either sell it on the street of be prepared to be disappointed. He said "I'm just letting you know ahead of time because I don't like people getting mad at me when I have no control over the offer". I have to respect his honesty on that one.

Finally, again I say that I hope Gander Mountain stays open. If they close down, the resonably priced stores won't have any reason to stay reasonable.

Speaking of matching prices......

I was at Cabelas one time looking for a 7mm Ultra Mag in a Remington CDL! I asked the guy behind the counter if they would match the BPS price and he said "Why...do they have it cheaper over there"! I said "Yes"! He said "How much"! When I told him he said "Wow....why didnt you buy it?" I said "Because I wanted to see if yall were cheaper than BPS"! He then said "You should have bought it if it was that cheap"! I then asked him if he was going to match the price or not and he said he would have to call and see if they had them in stock at BPS before he would match that price because it seems awfull cheap! Thats when I told him to call them and see for him self! When he got them on the phone I heard him repeat back to the guy on the other line "So you only have the display left"!! Thats when I told the Cabelas guy..."Tell them to hold it for me because i am on my way"!!

I got that gun and saved 10% more by applying for the BPS credit card!
