most of the AR parts and receivers are modular and will fit...however, I think there are some colt models/parts that won't interchange

I was looking at a .308 upper that specifically said it wouldn't fit a DPMS lower. That's the only time I've seen anything like that.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

There are a lot of parts that do interchange, especially in the same caliber or at least family of calibers. However, there are some folks out there that think they are designed as (Sorry for the wording JB) "modular". While they have some common components, they aren't modular like a Sig P250 or a HK XM-8 or the FN equivalent. There are some issues that you can run into, be careful.

One scary trend I have seen lately is the terminology of "Upper" and Upper Receiver, and Barrel, being used improperly. Changing "complete upper receivers" on compatible guns is usually OK (barring the Colt hole type and sizing issues). Changing barrels on upper receivers is not somehting recommended for the average daily operation or operator...

.308 upper assemblies are not for AR-15s. To make it more confusing there are several different .308 formats. Armalite/Noveske is one. DPMS/Fulton Armory is another. RRA/Bushmaster is a third. Knight's is another, but it shares magazines with the DPMS system. There are some smaller manufacturers that make lowers for some of these upper assemblies that use different magazines i.e. a lower that will use Armalite upper assemblies using G3 magazines.

Among AR-15 uppers and lowers they are all compatible except for the Colt's that have the oddball pivot pins. You can get adapters for those, but I don't know how well they work.
