Got a middle of December meat hunt drawn this year and was just curious if anyone had any updates/reports on how things were looking this year at the park?

Just came back from a youth weekend hunt, and it was a very successful one, there were 26 kids and the first night there were about 14 deer taken, not sure about the doe/buck ratio but there were some good bucks I heard; my son took a doe Saturday evening just before end of LST. The GW aged it at 5.5 years and weighted 62# dressed, and on Sunday he took a nice 8 pt buck, came at 94# dressed, so it was decent sized, and was aged at 3.5 yrs. We left the hunt around noon on Sunday as we had to take the deer to a processor, and I heard some other deer had been taken, some kids filled their 3 deer tags, but not sure of the final count as the hunt went on until 6pm, I'm sure you won't have any problem seeing deer. We corned the opening we were hunting on, and also dropped some sweet horse feed (Park staff told us the deer liked horse/mule feed); Sunday morning all corn was gone, but the horse feed seemed to be all there, maybe they didn't like the brand...? Park staff was awesome with the kids. We were in compartment 2, which is the Gorman Falls/Conference Center area; a kid got a nice big Auodad as well, not sure in what compartment he was; no pigs that I'm aware off. I'm going to try to resurrect my Photobucket account to load some pics and add to my original post from a few months back.

I just got back from the hunt. It was a great park and there are tons of deer. I used sweet feed mixed with corn. Ended up with two bucks, one being the largest of the three day hunt. First was a 8pt that one point had been broken off. Weighed in at 107lb, aged at 6.5 yrs. Next one was a 7 pt weighing in at 70lbs and 2.5 years. I was in compartment 2 with 4 other hunters. These were my first bucks ever besides a spike a couple years back. Overall the deer were smaller but I got pretty lucky. Be careful driving in to the park in the mornings, I ran over a bunny and got to one ft of a doe. Many deer are on the roads and will actually move into u or run across in front of you. The park staff called it deer derby driving to and from...

My brother and myself also hunted Colorado Bend during the same hunt. We were fortunate enough to be drawn for the annex backpacking hunt. There were supposed to be 4 hunters on this hunt but the other 2 didn't show so that made us the first 2 to hunt this area in 30 plus years. The area we were given to hunt is 600-650 acres with only about 80 acres being huntable. We had to canoe across the river to get to our hunting area. Seeing how neither one of us have ever canoed it proved to be difficult the first couple trips but we ended up getting the hang of it and got to where we could paddle upstream easily. The huntable area was along the river and was about 100 yards wide. The rest of the 600 acres was on top of a 200 ft cliff. The first day there we opted to climb to the top to see what we could score up top...that was a mistake. After 45 minutes of climbing we reached the top only to realize it was so thick that you couldn't see more than 15-20 yards so we ended up climbing back down and hunting the bottom that evening. We ended up shooting 2 does that evening. The next morning I saw and shot a smaller aoudad ram (pictured) and that evening I shot another doe (pictured). All together is was a fun and physically demanding hunt. The deer here aren't monsters but the experience was well worth it and I would definitely go back. Not to mention the staff here is exceptional.

You are not required to keep the aoudad meat. It is up to your discretion.

quickerNu, I think you will have 4 hunters total on the annex hunt. The park supervisor was thinking about putting 2 on the river and 2 on top of the cliff. We only hunted the river because the top was too thick to hunt. The top is where most of the land is but the longest opening we found was 20-30 yards. He may be able to put you in an area that is more huntable but we couldn't find any and we walked for a long time. I would recommend hunting the river bottom if he gives you the option. Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks for the info, that is kinda what it looked like from google earth. How was the river crossing? I have a big inflatable raft, but I can borrow a kayak if needed. How far is it from parking to putting in? I'm pretty excited about this one, I drew the backpacking hunt at Pedernales Falls state park last year, but only got a hog. I haven't had much time to hunt this year, so I'm relying on this hunt and antlerless at Hill country state park in a few weeks for all my meat!

The river crossing wasn't bad. It was flowing pretty good the first day but slowed down by the last day. Since we haven't had much rain I'm sure its not flowing and low. It dropped at least a foot while we were there. I would recommend a kayak or canoe because you will have to paddle upstream a few hundred yards to get to a good landing spot. This may have all changed since we haven't had any rain. As far as parking goes, you can get within about 10-20 yards of the river. If it stays cold you should do pretty good. It was in the 70s when were there in mid december.

If you are looking on google maps find Gorman Falls and you will be hunting right across the river from it.

Sorry for the delay, things are busy when you come back from 3 days off to hunt.
Overall, the hunt was a good time. I was unsuccessful, but it sure wasn't for lack of opportunity! I hope I knocked my scope off zero climbing the boulders and through the brush, but I have not checked the rifle out since I got back. The first day was raining pretty hard in the evening, and I didn't see anything. I could hear hogs, but nothing to shoot. The next morning was warmer and dry, but nothing presented itself. The river was moving pretty fast, so instead of trying to boat upstream in the 14' johnboat they let me use, I set up camp directly across the river from where I parked, and hiked to the flats across from Gorman Falls. The terrain doesn't allow you to just follow the river bank, you have to climb a good number of boulders through some pretty rough scrub to get there.
The next evening, however, I had plenty of opportunity. I was laying in a depression, on a shelf overlooking the flat. 2 small does walked out, but I decided to wait. About 5pm a buck appeared about 150 yards upstream from me. I rushed the shot and missed. I walked over there to make sure there was no blood, (there wasn't) and saw 2 audad about 75 yards from me. I took my time, fired, and they just turned their heads and looked at me. I loaded another round, again, took plenty of time, and missed again. They walked up the hill out of sight. Never saw anything else. I am not a bad shot. I have honestly never missed a deer before, so I am 99% sure I knocked my scope off zero.....badly. Wish I would have just brought my 30-30 and used iron sights. Should have brought my fishing gear, too, they were jumping!
