Hey brudda, I have done it solo many many times, if you are somewhat physically fit(ish) you will be just fine. Tent is the biggest hurdle and the reason my wife thought I needed something else with my "issues" LOL, I wasn't going to argue an exchange for a camper Same with the elk, it will take time and some smarts, but after you are done, it should eclipse any other hunt you've had. You will sure earn a drink and know you did something by morning

Right!, I eat good the few day's prior, but seems its a can opener, or cereal, or maybe a sandwich or 4 by the time I get in past dark. My days can be real long, usually an all day out hunt from a couple hrs before light and an hr after dark. Needles to say, I relax a bit, watch some tv and get shut eye for early am get up.

Hey guys read most of your post and wish I could join y'all. Looks like Y'all will have a blast. But my wife put together a guided hunt around Lizard head wilderness during the second rifle season. Me an elk and she is after a mule deer. My question is, if I order my OTC tag now will it get to me in time? I know some say just buy it in when you get up there, but just weighing my options. THANKS AND GOOD LUCK

Personally, this time of year, I'd get one up there. Walmart is 24 hrs and you should pass a few of them, there is one in Cortez and Durango. The gas station across from the liquor store in Dolores used too as well, but I wouldn't bank on that unless Sneaky's crew can tell you from last year.

I order buy mine on the way up online and just have them print it off at the walmart in Durango. That way I dont have to worry about the mail man loosing it. But with over 4 weeks till season starts I would really hope they can get it to you in that amount of time.

THANKS, you have not had any problems late at night with no one knowing how to process it? Not in over 30 years, they know the onslaught of hunters are coming. Never even had to use a manager in Durango, or Cortez and I usually hit them on arrival from midnight to 3am, never had an issue. There is also a DOW office in Durango and it is full service 9a-5p

We just stopped in Durango to pick up our licenses last year. MAKE SURE that you inform your credit card company that you are traveling up that way... I didn't think to let my CC company know, and they locked me out of my card while trying to get my license.

ZK, that is weird...I guess you just called the number on the back of the card and said WTH, right? Never had that happen, but it would sure get my hair standing on end...

I called my wife and had her call them since I was holding up the line, but yes, she just called the number on the back of the card and told them I was out of town so the "attempted charges" weren't fraudulent. I tried a few more cards, same thing. Luckily my dad was there and he had planned ahead. He went ahead and paid for it, and I just paid him cash once we got back to the truck.

Coming down off the mountains now. I was amazed and humbled. To be right smack in the middle of elk. Day one I called a bull in to 61 yards for my buddy. Giant 6x6 that anyone would shoot anywhere in Colorado. He just made one mistake and it was over. Day 2 we woke up and we're pinned down by a herd on the ridge 3/4 to a mile away. When they went down into the meadow I took in chase. I can tell you it's rough to catch a feeding herd heading for timber. I got to the timber line and pretty much sat down in defeat when I did a couple cows busted loose not 10 yards in the timber. We sat over that meadow again a few more times but I guess you booger up twice in the same meadow it's over.
Next day I got in behind another herd they got up on a bench and he bugled at me a few times. Wind was swirling. I backed off.
We scouted a new area and we could hear 4 different Bulls down below us. We went in and started stalking benches. My buddy was in lead he came 30 yards from a cow they both saw each other at the exact moment. She never winded us so she only trotted off. We had several Bulls answer cow calls but again raining and storms had the wind swirling badly. Every time you set up on one wind switched and you have to start over.
Right now my body is sore, I smell like an elk and I'm ready for something besides mountain house.
