A true quality hatchet is the Wetterlings brand.

I'll go with that mid sized (all metal) eastwing. but as far as I'm concerned a hatchet is almost totally useless and an axe isn't much better For dry dead wood a sledge hammer works better or of course a chain saw.

Go with the gerber. I have a midsize one. I also have the gerber that is a machete/hatchet combo. Has a blade that is about 12" long with a hook on the end. That thing is bad arse.

Wetterlings are awesome. Granfors Bruks are as well, but I am not sure they are worth the extra cost over the Wetterlings.

I have a whole arsenal of hatchets and mid size axes that I have aquired over the years. I like the ones with about 18" of handle. If you keep them sharp, a Gerber or Estwing will treat you good. I really like using that Gerber brush hook type machete I got last year. Really good for small clearing jobs around your stand, etc.

Gerber and Estwing are good, also have a Schrade hatchet knife 2pc combo set I like too.
Gerber's interchangeable saw blades are awesome though, and so light, I seldom carry a hatchet anymore other than in the truck. The saw has both a wood and a bone blade with it... it's cool.
