I posted this on another forum....

Evidently someone has a female that they think should be bred. Especially since they're sending her to a pro for training....

What do you think???

I posted....

I think anyone who considers breeding should do it. But do it the right way...

-Up all night assisting the ***** whelping.
-Doing ENS from day 3 to day 10
-Taking the whole shooting match to the vet for dew claw removal before day 3.
-Making sure each puppy is weighed twice a day to note milk intake.
-Watch the litter almost 24-7 to be sure mom doesn't lay on, move, or eat her puppies.... For the first 2 weeks.
-After mom has had enough of them,,,, getting them eatting 4 times a day. Again weigh each puppy twice a day to make sure they're gaining the appropriate percentage of daily weight.
-Mucking out the puppy play pen twice a day which is a lot of work once mom isn't interested in cleaning up after them.
-Wash bedding and puppy toys everyday, sometimes twice a day.
-No visitors to the puppies until week 5. Outsiders bring in lots of nasty, unkowns. Those same visitors need to leave their shoes at the front door and disenfect their hands before handling the puppies. (Parvo is soooo nasty).
-Have them retrieving at 5 weeks everyday until they go home.
-Swimming in a clean pond or pool twice a week after 6 weeks.
-make sure the neighbor kids come and handle them, after they've taken off their shoes and have washed their hands, to socialize them. After week 5.
-At 5 weeks, have other friendly adult dogs play with them, (socialize, socialize, socialize)
-introduced to a live pigeon around 7 weeks. Preferrably a couple thrown into their playpen for them to go "crazy" over...

That part is easy....

What if,,,,,

-What if your ***** needs a emergency c-section?
-needs a wet nurse because she doesn't have enough milk?
-Is a terrible mother,,, so guess who the mother will be?
-Is totally out to lunch, sits on her puppy's and won't clean them?

See where I'm going???

Have a litter. It'll do you good...

Don't worry about selling them,,,, after going through all of the above? If folks knew what you went through???

They'd still only want to pay $50.00, and if you were friends they'd want a freebee....

Breed,,, breed her. Go ahead. Let me know how much fun you have and how much money you make

Angie

I think that the average joe has no idea what whelping, raising, and selling a litter of puppies entails.

I don't do any breeding at all and there is a reason for it .

That is a very good post. BTW we can say bitch on here. Bitch wasn't a bad word until daytime television and rappers got hold of it.

Great post Angie. I think Zack is right, the average person doesn't know/understand what it takes to raise a litter. It seems like many folks are only concerned about how much money they can make.

Been there; done that. Keep the t-shirt. I don't need any reminders.

The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life. Theodore Roosevelt

Wow, I take it Angie you have had some bad experiences. I really don't think it is quite as bad as you stated. Yes bad things can happen, but we can what if nearly all experiences in life and get bad results. I have bred dogs a few times over the years (by no means am I a puppy mill)and have enjoyed raising pups. Fortunately my dogs have been good mothers and have had no major problems. We are also friends with the Vet. if the need arises. As for the money. There is a little money that can be made, I wouldn't go as far as getting rich. Most of my dogs breeding has been when I have someone wanting a pup from my dogs. Not disagreeing with you totally, just wanted to offer my opinion that it is not a total waste of time and money.
