I grew up in Louisiana did a lot of duck hunting but now live in Texas and want to try my hand at dove hunting. This is probably a silly question in most people's opinion but should I keep the full choke in my gun or no? Will a full choke tear the dove up too much to eat?

I/C is what I use for doves and shooting steel for ducks. My full choke it's not to be used with steel
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Where I hunt in Central Texas most shots are close, so a full choke is a bit tight for me.
I agree with Barny. IC is great. There have been times I have hunted with a Skeet choke. Small gauge is preferred or light 12s (7/8 to 1 oz shot max). Steel is not needed - Yea!

You really won't know till you see your hunting spot. Distance will determine the choke needed. that said, I always shoot tighter rather than loose.

totally depends on the shooter and his/her shooting style. I shoot a well patterned full pretty much all the time, might not be able to get it out of my hunting gun if I tried. With that and the right shells I know I'm good to 60. when in your face shots present themselves, pull off of them a little to not damage the bird too bad. that is pertaining mostly to ducks. your average person dove hunting, I/c or mod would probably be best.

Yes I grew up duck hunting and I got to see if the full choke will even come out lol. My thought was that a full choke would tear the bird up too bad. I don't have a problem with hitting them with full choke just don't want to tear them up. Thanks for help and insight

In Tx it is mostly women that use IC----------- if they are close you can let them fly out a little with tight choke.

Use Skeet (or IC) if the shots are close and Mod if the shots are not close. 1oz of good hard lead shot (like Win AA or Rem STS) in #7.5 will work for both close & far shots (including high flying white wings). Good luck!

Modified choke has always worked, 3/4oz hard shot or plated 7.5's in the 28a 870. Good to about 35-40yards.

So many birds flying while hunting at Stompy's place last season, I/C worked for me.

I usually us an IC about 80% of the time I'm dove hunting. I'll use skeet if I know my shots will be really close.
