I was looking at a semiauto 12 gauge shotgun and it said it chambered 3 and 3 1/2 what happens if you tried to shoot 2 3/4? It was a gas operated gun.

Will work fine. You can always go shorter than rated not ever longer. If it's an auto however it may not cycle properly unless it is a heavy load 2 3/4" shell

Some 2 3/4" shells don't have the power to cycle the actions on the semi-autos. If you use heavy dove loads they will probably work, but a lot of semi-autos won't cycle (eject the spent hull and load a new one) the lighter target loads. You will end up with an expensive single-shot shotgun.

Always use at least 1oz to 1 1/8oz loads, those 3/4oz loads wont cycle at all...

I used to shoot a Remington 1100 Magnum. The barrel was chambered for 3". It would not cycle 2 3/4" shells. I was told that the 3" Magnum receiver was compatible with a 2 3/4" factory barrel. The 3" barrel only had one gas port and the 2 3/4" had two. The second port allowed for more gas flow to compensate for the weaker 2 3/4" shell. I used this setup for many years and several thousand rounds. If anyone has an 1100 Magnum I highly recommend this conversion. Just make sure no one tries to chamber a 3" shell in the 2 3/4" chambered barrel.

I also have a 935 and it cycles any ammo that carries 1 1/8oz load, the remington sport load 100rd valuepack sold at walmart works great.

i also have a 935 and it handles heavy skeet/dove loads well. I like the rem nitro gold skeet load for clay shooting...works great. Anything under 1 1/8oz probably won't work, as the gun is designed for 3 or 3 1/2 only.

That is totally dependant upon your gun. My Beretta 391 will shoot 3/4oz loads all day long.

The 935 actually was not made for 2 3/4" loads but will handle them if they are hot loads or heavy loads. It's not the gun you should be using if you are into shooting clays and dove. It's a good waterfowling gun though.
