I was finally able to go through all my hunting pictures from this past season, and I came across this wonderful picture of Gus on point and Tank firmly backing. It was a pleasure to watch these dogs work on that beautiful day in Throckmorton. Tank and Gus are brothers and worked in perfect tandem. I don't recall taking this picture, so you can imagine my surprise when I came across it last night. Would love to see your pictures of your dogs backing.

Great thread. The second picture is Yeats the red setter pup backing Cracker. He backed the first dog he ever saw pointing.

This was a couple years back hunting pheasant in Montana. Three Spinoni in the picture. This was in Colorado hunting pheasant. My two Spinoni backing a Brittany on point. If you look closely you can see a Springer on "hup" also honoring the point. Pretty awesome!

Love that red setter!!! Never owned one but if I was younger I think I would. Every photo of this dog has been intense and beautiful. Where did you get this dog?

He does not belong to me but I would have one if I were to have another pup. He belongs to my good friend ET. Here's a link I started on him. There's another link to the Snipe Hunters Forum that ET posted on there after picking up the pup. http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1994546/Red_setter_pup#Post1994546

So what are your training methods for backing. Seems like the dominant / competitive dogs are hard for me to get to back

The best and easiest method for me is to walk a young dog in on a check cord behind a pointed dog. They get scent and stop. They soon after a time or two start to act on the visual que. In the few cases this hasn't worked I will pick the dog up and with his butt first (carry him in backwards) walk him in turn and drop him. This always seems to work if the CC doesn't.

Before you can ever start training a dog to honor, it has got to understand what "whoa" means. It can't be an option. That is the foundation.

Just have to agree to disagree here. I grew up old school in Kansas when we had large numbers of birds and I let the birds break my pups. Because of this I have never believed in whoaing a dog to point and on a back only if I don't think he can see the other dog or is a chance of busting the covey. Now granted today is a different ballgame with most folks having no access to large wild bird numbers which makes teaching whoa a must. And I'll admit that I have had to use whoa more in the last decade than ever before. I think of whoa as a must but try to use it to control situations where the dog needs some help.
Last season I broke a nice Millers pup to point with birds only and started whoa work after the season. He never heard whoa in the field and by end of Dec was standing his birds. Always a strong bird finder he now is doing it completely on instinct and taught himself to stop and learned the need to stop early. I believe he will back naturally now or be easy to get backing. I can always put an older dog on point and teach a young one to back. But they all have to learn whoa and a must again to finish them (wing and shot).

Chet, I don't whoa a dog to point or on point, never have. But for a young dog in the field with the older dog and if the pup will not naturally back, I want a way to shut the action down when older dogs are on point. A pup does not have to go through this scenario too many times until he gets it. I have broke many young dogs in the field to honor with the nick feature turned down pretty low on my e-collar. I never say a word to the dog. When I feel the young dog has a line of sight on the pointed dog and he is still moving, he will get a gentle reminder, no words spoken. A pup has to learn that he is not honoring for you as much as he is honoring the whole scene...point ahead.... flush... action. But then again, I still teach "whoa" in the backyard as a control mechanism and the pup does learn if he does not shut it down until I say okay, there will be consequences. All of my dogs honor to a fault. Most of it comes from experience but was grounded with some simple whoa training at an early stage of their training. I have said this on this forum before that there is nothing more irritating to me than to see an older dog that will not honor. I get it with young dogs. They will learn from their mistakes if they are kept in plenty of birds. You know when the pup's light has come on when he points one covey and backs the next without anything being said or done by you to him. I am not one of those hunters that is constantly screaming whoa whoa whoa every time a dog is on point. I hate that. But if I am going in to flush and a dog is not in the moment, a quick, terse whoa or whup is spoken. The more silence and stillness around a point and flush, the better.

We're not that far apart on the subject. And couldn't agree more about the hunter that is constantly whoaing his dog on point, only adds un-necessary pressure especially for a young dog. If a guy has to constantly whoa his dog to stay on point he aint broke. You learn to read your dog if he's moving up because the birds are running, and for a bird hunter that's a good thing.

My HTA pointer became trial wise and collar wise. I could still whoa her but you can't score a back if you whoa them.
