Anyone happen to know if Turkeys are prevalent in the Sam Houston National Forest? I am wondering if it is even worth going there to try and hunt them this April. I am a first time turkey hunter and looking for an area that has a decent population.

Based on what I've been told, restocking efforts haven't created an abundance of turkeys in either the Sam Houston or Davey Crocket National Forest.

You might check with the TPWD and see if any turkeys were checked in last season from these areas. I don't believe a wild turkey has ever been taken off the DC.

And even if you're lucky enough to find one to hunt, I wouldn't recommend it, based on the fact they're practically non-existant.

we hunted in walker county for the better part of 5 years, and i never saw a turkey, or any signs of them.

i just don't think the stocking efforts paid off.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

The Davy Crockett, or I should say the Alabama Creek WMA has a pretty good population of Easterns in it and those who scout early and hard, seem to always get a bird or at least call them up.

I use to cut thru the SHNF quite a bit and every now and then I saw a flock of turkeys on the west side of StubbleField lake on one of the forest roads. But that was back in the late 90's.
I live pretty close to the SHNF off of FM1374 and would hear one gobble also.

I sure hope that's still the case and they expand their range. My lease is west of that area towards Lovelady.

Thanks for sharing.

I hunt a couple of tracts of private land located NE of Lovelady and adjacent to the Davey Crockett National Forest. I also hunt the DC.
