I hate the dark but I love to hunt and I refuse to use a light......so I suck it up. Nothing has kilt me yet.

When hunting deer or elk in the Rocky Mountain States, I like to get up a couple hours before light to get to where I can see the most country, and I also like to stay out in the best spot I can find and wait until dark before heading back to camp. I've never had any fear issues out hunting in those areas. Same with Alaska. One night a buddy and me where watching two huge bull moose fighting each other down in a big valley. We knew it was getting late, but they where very big bulls. We went for it, but lost them, and then after it got dark, came up the wrong ridge and couldn't find camp. We spent the night next to a fire trying to stay warm. He was worried about bears, but I was too tired and fell asleep quickly.
But when I'm out mowing my pastures at night, when it's cooler during summer, I absolutely get scared if I have to walk back to the house in the dark, through the grass. I have enough snakes on my land that they are fairly common. I'm afraid of snakes. My imagination runs away from my common sense while I'm out walking through stuff in the dark. The longer I'm walking, the greater the fear that develops. I expect to get bit any second!!!!

I've gotten really close to a skunk before I saw it and had I taken a few more steps, the hangover I was nursing that morning would have been complicated by trying to get skunk smell of me.

I was a little scared a few weeks ago. Guy was in his trailer on the lease next to us playing porn really loud. I made lots of noise and freaked him out. He turned it down and I didn't see him again.

I'm headed out today alone for the weekend. I don't get too nervous except about snakes. We have a few and I don't relish the thought of getting bit while alone. We are easily an hour away from a hospital and 30-40 minutes from a town with an ambulance. Hope the helicopter is gassed up! The only time I wear snake boots is when I'm there alone. I enjoy the solitude every once and again. I enjoy it more during deer season, but still will be a good trip this time of year. I'm ready to leave NOW. Dang work

There is a calming attitude that takes over when alone at night and on high alert in the bush, whether in the mountains, Africa or Texas. It occurs to me that it is primitive and self reliant. (A thought to ponder on.)

Doesn't usually bother me being out there lone. A friend of mine, however, absolutely refuses to go to his lease by himself ever gain. A few years ago he did a morning hunt, got out of his stand, and pulled the game-cam card. When he viewed them on hs laptop over breakfast it REALLY freaked him out, ad I don't blame him. There were a coupla' pics of about 5 adults, women and men, with freaked out, lost in their own minds, nobody home vacant stares on their faces. They each had a slung AR and you can make out at least a few sidearms. What scared him the most was the pics were taken about 15 minutes before he climbed into his stand.
To those of you alone in places most likely counting on a helocopter rescue, get the GPS coordinates of a likely landing spot to give to the 911 operator. It doesn't matter if he/she knows what they mean, the pilot will and it's easier to find that than the address of a gate on a Farm to Market road from the air.
Y'all be safe out there.

I usually only go once or twice a year by myself. Not because I'm scared but it gets boring! I always at least take a dog or two with me, not that those two wimps are gonna do anything. My problem is always my imagination.

I used to never give the first care until a couple months ago I got out of a box blind for about a 150 yd walk to the feeder to adjust my IR light setup on a pitch black night around 10 pm or so. No sidearm, no rifle, no headlight. About 80-90 yds. across I hear a very deep hog snort behind me, to the right. I stopped, turned around half expecting to hear it run off and nothing, not a sound... I double-timed it to the feeder, and hung out for a couple minutes. Let me tell you, that was one very long walk back to the blind. Now I go nowhere without my 1911 and my headlight.

I hunted until about 10:00PM last Saturday. Hoping to catch some pigs that night, I walked down to set our pig trap near the feeder. The trap is huge, I was standing inside of it setting the trip wire when a sounder of pigs came running in, making all kinds of snorting and squealing, about a dozen 50-150 pounders. They came all of the way to the feeder and up to the door of the trap, they didn't seem to care that I was there, they were easy to see with the hog light on. It was an intense moment, I recon they were as close as 10 feet from me. Unlike CharlieCTx above, I was armed. I took a shot with my 308 at a big one near the feeder from about 10 yards, they scattered. I bet I missed that pig by 3 feet, I never found signs of a hit. Scary things happen at night, I never thought I would get trapped by pigs.

I used to hunt alone all of the time. But now that I don't drive so I am never there by myself. From our place we see the lights of Ballinger, that is 15 miles away, Rowena that is 5 miles away and if a football game is going one we can see the lights of Miles. Kind of neat sitting there with binos and watching the lights blink or change from red to green. Now when I go someone always wants a fire and you lose the darkness and the ability to see the lights in town.

I actually don't mind walking in to my stand in the dark. What bothers me is getting the spiders in my face as I don't use a light. I get a little antsy on the ground walking with all my gear on my back-climbing stand, rifle, back-pack, etc; If something were to jump out at me there really is nothing I can do as it would take time to get the rifle off my back, load it, and then fire into the darkness? So, I just press on. Once I get up in my tree I actually fall asleep.. Ha ha. It is so relaxing being in the woods up in a climbing stand.. So, no fear on my part. If it's going to eat me, it's just going to have to chew through my metal climbing stand on my back as I attempt to run away.

Nope.
Used to never carry a flashlight with me since I like walking to the stand and back in the dark. Starting carrying one when I got back to the four wheeler one night and had hogs all around it. It was aggravating knowing they were within 30-40 yards of me and I couldn't see them to shoot.
Only animal I worry about is a skunk.

Couple weeks ago I was stalking pigs in a wheat field after dark and flushed birds twice. I wasn't scared stalking, but thought I was going to die when the birds flushed.

My son and his buds were down south this weekend at a friends ranch, Hog hunting. One of the guys stayed in his blind till about midnight and seeing no how, decided he would go to another guys blind. Shortly after he got up in the blind with the other guy, he started feeling bad. Long story short, he had a heart attack. Had he had it when he was alone in his blind, he might have died, the other guys got him to a truck, took him to Beeville, where he was ambulances to Corpus. Lucky. They all learned a lesson.
