Traveled to Denver to pick up my first duck/dove hunting dog last month. He's a mutt Pudelpointer x GSP (got him on the cheap). Now i've been training simple obedience, water intro., gun shyness, and currently looking for live training birds. My plan is to send him away when he's 6 months (around August). i've contacted two training kennels (run-n-gun and Rio Concho). Rio Concho specializes in versatile breeds, and told me he would only train for one month then i take him hunting and bring him back before next season. run-n-gun said they train for three months and your dog is complete. I'm torn on what i should do, I'm going to contact more kennels, just looking for some advice from seasoned dog owners.

I hated my dog being gone for 3 months. See if you can find others who have done the 1 month and see how that went.

I would gladly send my pup for three months if she were guaranteed to come back "finished".

What's going to happen in a month or even three? In a month, I was told he will be taught basic retrieving in water and land, gun shyness, and obedience. in 3 month, all the above and.. steadiness in blind, more complex retrieving, maybe one other thing

Do you wanna test your dog out towards the end of dove season or wait til duck season and have a finished dog? While 3 months is a long time without your companion, I'd rather get back a dog that's ready to go and me not have to try and train while we hunt because the dog hasn't been worked enough.

A month is not even enough time to complete basic obedience.

How are Pudelpointers on training? Do they hold up well to pressure, or are they one of the softer breeds? It they are soft on training, I would send the pup to a trainer with versatile breed experience. If they are not known to be soft, than you have more options.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

I like the look of the Rio Concho kennels. I wonder if they would take him for three months instead of one.

Kindall: Thats a good question, he's pretty hardy and not much shakes him
Baylor_bears: I asked him about that and his response was, "we train him initially for 1 month, then you bring him back and we will train him for a longer time frame"

Baylor_bears: I asked him about that and his response was, "we train him initially for 1 month, then you bring him back and we will train him for a longer time frame" I spoke with him last night and was told he would have to "tailor" a program if he didn't train through his puppy program. I am still interested though, was very friendly on the phone.

If the pup is 6 months and the OP has done all that they said they did with pup then it's time for formal training not a "puppy program". One month or even three is not enough to start all but the most talented and rapidly maturing of dogs. My advice would be to keep looking.

Tammy Casa - 512-971-4375 for Versatile Dog Training. She's trained and tested multiple Drahthaars through the system. If I wasn't training my dogs myself, Tammy is where I would send my V-dog.
