My son shoots a Remington 243 and has done very well at shot placement on the 6 or 7 deer that he has killed so far. But most every deer he shoots runs about 100yds before dropping dead. Typical exit wounds may be only the size of a quarter! He uses Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips. Do other cartriges disintegrate better and consequently cause more damage that will result in a quicker death? Thanks

A deer can run a hunderd yards in seconds. Thats as pretty quick death, but Im sure somebody with some ballistic info will help you out on here.

You might think about getting Ryan a upgrade, maybe look at the 260 rem. or 7mm-08, basically the same case, but your able to go up on the grainage, you can get a lot more energy out of these calibers. Taylor and I have the 7mm-08 and love it. I shot a buck last year with a 140 gr., he never took a step. There are some great wt deer bullett weights in both calibers.

Stop using ballistic tips, they disintegrate TOO quickly. Try Remington 100 grain Core Lokts. I've shot a .243 for over 14 years now and have only lost 1 deer......shot with Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tips. The furthest I have had a deer run with Core Lokts was about 25 yards and that was with a perfect vitals shot destroying the heart and lungs but not hitting the shoulder.

x2.
Nothing wrong with the .243. Just stick with a bonded bullet, ie; Nosler Parition, Rem Core-Lokt, even the Federal "blue-box" will work better than the ballistic tips.

Here is a video of my son shooting a buck at 160 yards with his .243. He is shooting 100 gr winchester power points.
They don't drop any quicker than that!!! Congrats to your son Helo. Glad he could hold the rifle steadier than you could hold the cam.

LMAO. Yeah I had the cam zoomed all the way in, and it is hard to hold steady zoomed in.
Thanks.

x2 on shot placement I shoot a 243 and used the same ammo he is. I dropped a big 8 pt in his tracks this past season.

Nothing wrong with ballistic tips in my opinion! I have shot a ton of animals with them and never had any issues with explosion, or failure to expand! I have used them in just about every caliber known to man and never had issues with them! Only bullet I have ever had fail on me is a 175 grain core lockt shot from a 7 Mag!

By the way......if you really "need more carnage", I have a 458 Win. Mag. and a 416 Rem. Mag. I would sell you! If that aint enough for you then them deer must be bullet proof!

i use 270 wsm 130gr winchester ballistic tip and have had great results on deer. havent used them on anything else. i think they are perfect for thin skinned moderate muscle game such as whitetail.

Yea, looks like I am going to have to work a little harder to convince Jan we need the AR! Back to my question, it seems common opinion that the ballistic silvertips expand pretty easily and that is what I was needing to know. I only questioned that cause hit deer run about 100 yds and the exit wound is fairly small. He has killed deer in their tracks with my 270. If I considered putting my son in another caliber we are pretty limited cause we both shoot left handed and he loves his 243. Most replies indicate that the 243 is adequate for whitetail, and I agree. But I was just hoping other cartriges were known to fragment more easily. Thanks for all your replies!!

I started hunting with a .243 this past season. 3 deer, down with 1 shot each, all hit the ground as the bullet hit them. Not 1 step from any of them. Blue box federals are the ticket, best shooting ammo i've ever used. All though i did shoot a big old board on the run, shot him 3 times with the .243, and 3 times with a 30.06 before he stopped. He was still alive when we walked up on him and i had to put another behind the ear to finight him with the .243. They are the toughest animal i've ever hunted. I've shot about 10 so far this year, and i've only came home with 6. I've used the .223, and the 7.62x39, broadside body shots and they run ogg every time. But i hear the ear shot will do it everytime. I've not had the chance to earhole one yet.

I like Winchester Power Points. They are a lot cheaper than the siver tips and I haven't had a problem with them taking deer or hogs down yet.

I think crazyal has a point, the Winchester power points (silver box) i think, or the federal blue box (power shoks) has done well for me with everything i have shot, all from .270 (not .243) and have had excellent results from both, in accuracy and kill shot.
I just think some of the "high dollar" ammo is a lot of hype just to sell the ammo JMO

That is what my son was using in that video I posted the silver box 100 grain power points. His cheap old NEF handi rifle is a tack driver with them. I have shot under 1 inch at 200 yards with it. It was actually 248 yards I just found out recently.

Everbody has a right to their own opinion......... Here's mine....I see lots of critters get it every year as a professional outfitter/guide, and I say that ballistic tips are great on paper and varmints, but they Suck on anything bigger. I can tell you a dozen stories about chasing and tracking all kinds of wounded stuff that was shot with a ballistic tip, especially if they're hit in the shoulder.
