my buddy always talks about ducks 'lighting' or (when used in a sentence) "they came into the slough and lit about 50 yds down from me". He says 'lit' means they landed. Is this correct? Sound to me like it'd mean like...'flared'.

Also. Is it wigeon his way (wee-jin) or wigeon my way (wih-jin.

Sorry but with duck season over we get a little irratable w/ each other

Lit or to light means to land.

The pronunciation depends on region, but the etymologically proper way is wih-juhn. Widgeon is also a correct alternate spelling.

I have heard light used in reference to birds landing too. I never thought about it before, I guess it just made sense in the context it was used. I mean the word light describes weight so I guess I just equate it to "light as a feather" the way they cup and drop in.

It is not duck terminology. To "light" has been a word or term I have used in vocabulary my entire life. My grandfather used that word often. But in reference to people, not ducks. For example during my Colorado trip someone asked me where I was going to stay. I replied "Where I light each night is where I camp. I'll know when I get there".

Ok, you caught my interest because I never thought of my use of the word as anything unusual. So i looked up light as a verb on dictionary.com Saying a duck lighted is no more originated in duck terminology than saying a duck landed or a duck settled.

1. to get down or descend, as from a horse or a vehicle.
2. to come to rest, as on a spot or thing; fall or settle upon; land: The bird lighted on the branch. My eye lighted on some friends in the crowd.
3. to come by chance; happen; hit (usually fol. by on or upon): to light on a clue; to light on an ideal picnic spot.
4. to fall, as a stroke, weapon, vengeance, or choice, on a place or person: The choice lighted upon our candidate.

Another example using the word by a Methodist Preacher. Of which my Grandfather was during a time in his life.

"The devil has no better servant than a preacher who is laying feather-beds for fallen Christians to light on."

As for duck terminology, once a regular hunting buddy and I took a coworker out for his first duck hunt. In advance my friend and I made up all kinds of fake duck terminology to use on the hunt. Wood Ducks we called "Corgies". Empty shotgun hulls we called "Spenders". When someone did a lot of shooting we said he was "plantin spenders". Those are the only two I can remember right now but we planted a bunch of fake terms with him. I would have loved to see the reaction when that guy hunted with another duck hunter and started using all those terms we taught him.

One you see often is people calling them canadian geese. They are Canadas... not canadians. They did not get that name b/c they are from Canada.
