I'm wantin to start shooting in a few long range competitions each year mainly for fun, practice and to hopefully learn a few things. Need to stay within 2-3 hours of San Antonio though. Where is the best place to find out about such events? Thanks.

Don't know about 2-3 hours from San Antonio but we are having the 3rd annual hunters challenge which is geared towards hunters 300 yards and in. We also did a long range comp last year don't know if Jason will be doing it this year but it was all the way out to 800 yards and a bit more technical than the hunters challenge. Great fun and full of great guys that don't mind helping one another during the match and I've learned a bunch since I've started shooting these. Also learned I suck at shooting haha.

What type of competition are you thinking? There is everything from f-class to prs.

While not exactly long range or precision, you may want to look into 3-gun. We will shoot some targets out to 400-500 yards.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

If you're looking for a non-competitive environment to practice in, the Kerrville range (Hill Country Shooting Sports) has a 500 yard range open every other weekend. It may or may not be open during the winter because it's run by a volunteer, James, but he's really helpful when it's open.
He can talk your ear off for hours, but sometimes seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of firearms. He's also happy to spot for you, and give helpful hints.
It's usually not very crowded too, so it allows you to really hone your skills at your pace.

Thanks for the replies. Something like The one in Utopia sounds interesting. Also, gonna see about visiting the range in Kerrville from time to time.
Anybody have info on the one in Utopia or any others in the 400 - 500 yd distance range?
I wish I could go to the 300 yd hunter challenge but I'm afraid that's a little to far of a drive.

Also look into the Precision Rifle Series matches. It really depends on what type of shooting you want to do. Look into Rifles Only in Kingsville for some training. They have one of the best training facilities in the nation.
