Ok, lets see a comparison to 260, 7mm08, 270wsm...a few that have been mentioned in this discussion.

stxrancher, if you don't mind, how old are you and how long have you been hunting deer?

According to your numbers above, you have killed a minimum of 1,400 deer. Just wondering.

I would like to kill a deer with a .22, I think it would be challenging but i'm not brave enough yet.

I'm confused, is it still ok to bow hunt? Or can we only kill deer with a bazooka now?

You know, folks say that like it's just the answer to all things. When, in reality, it says nothing of real value in the field.

I mean, let's advocate to make the .22LR legal for deer. It falls under the heading of "any caliber", right?

I love it when these threads follow their predicted progression from:
1)the .223 is too small for deer; to
2)it will work for deer with limitations; to
3)it is the Hammer of Thor and the best deer caliber going (replete with all the "never/hardly lost a deer in my life and they are all/nearly all DRT" stories).

Now we even have a guy being made fun of because he prefers his .223 over his .30-06 for varmints - as if that's some outlandish proposition. This place is a riot. rolleyes

No the riot is when guys come on hear saying a 223 or 22-250 is a joke to hunt with yet they may have only killed 10-20 deer.

The riot is they are agruing with guides and ranch managers that literally have culled 50 deer a year via a 223 or 22-250 for last decade plus.

So who is right? The want to be Feild and Stream authors or the guys that are taking 50 plus deer a YEAR. 10-20 vs 100-400 deer?

Ok Bobo I'm not taking sides, because I don't care what anyone else hunts with, but why do many of the same ranchers and guides that you speak of have a 243 or larger policy? Not because a 223 can't kill a deer but because there is very little room for error with one and people tend to get nervous when shooting at a big buck. I guess y'all are both right. Will a 223 kill a deer, well hell yea it will! Is it ideal in the hands of most people, hell no!

I've hunted all over never been on a ranch that had a caliber policy. I can assure you any good guide would be happier with ability to shoot the caliber then what caliber it is.

My biggest issue is telling basically a Professional Hunter that he was LUCKY using a 223/22-250. That is idiotic when STX has probably killed and cull 100x(litteraly) more deer then the key board 5'4 little guy that just called me boy.

Like i said one thing to debate, a whole other thing when you start being a smart arse to people that are on this forum to help and offer up actual real world experience.

When it gets called out- it gets even more sarcastic. That means one thing, it doesn't actually hunt, it has always been told to shoot.

He is retired now from big ranch management.

It's not just STX. I know atleast 6 guys that cull 30-100 deer a year on ranches they manage. Some years they can get clients to take majority other years they are racing to meet thier MLD numbers.

(I would have quoted the post but you can only quote posts up to 4 levels deep.)

No sir, I was referring to your remark about "rookies who can't shoot"...to be clear, there is no need for the snarkiness in that post (among others). And, your paraphrasing is not correct either, I never said energy doesn't matter, I questioned whether the energy difference between those two specific calibers really mattered on Texas Deer.

How many deer have you actually shot with a properly loaded 223?

+1

I only load ammo, I rarely buy factory fodder simply for the infinite increase in quality control for significantly less cost than I can get from the factory...plus I can tune the load to the rifle. That said, it is significantly cheaper to load 223 than other calibers, if for no other reason than component availability. That is where the difference really shines, especially when comparing it to 260/7-08, 270, etc...

Feel free. .243 is enough gun for TX deer IMO - infinitely better than the .223.

Years ago I actually had to work for a living. We had a pilot who would stir things up. There was another pilot and flight engineer who would take the bait and would go off the deep end. The rest of us new what was going on would sit back and enjoy the show. Kinda like here. Ain't life good?

I'll dial it down:
1)Find the post where you say I called you a "boy". I don't recall saying that. If I said anything you took like that, then you are reading in a perceived insult that wasn't there.

2)Differing with someone on a caliber discussion is not trolling or insulting someone - it's just a difference of opinion. I haven't insulted STX - period. Whether you or him or anyone else thinks I did is their problem (and it's a common one one here).

Some rational folks might say saying someone is a rookie, can't shoot, has no experience, needs to be told to point and shoot, has no real world knowledge (when you personally know better) etc. might, OTOH, be trolling or insulting. Or maybe it just depends on who's ox is being gored. As it often does around here.

You have persoanlly PMed me several times and we have offered each other mutual respect on our hunting experiences. But that means nothing when you perceive (wrongly) that you or a buddy is being "insulted". Then, magically, I am a rank rookie know-nothing.
That says it all.

NP- I'm the most non biased person on this forum.

I have respect for your merits and I have apologized when I felt I was wrong or too pointed in a way that diminished my point...with that said l will call a spade a spade.

JEERRRY! JEERRRY! JEERRRY!

j/k on a side note, has anyone shot a model 700 Remington? I saw the tv show about the gun firing without pulling the trigger and all the law suits against them. It was interesting.

I understand if your hunting far wide open land and making far shots or taking some big animals, but the .223 can go through some pretty thick hog hide (I know this one for a fact) so a deer should never be a problem, unless it is too far. Someone brought of shooting 200 yards with 20 mph wind, which was something I never thought of. I never really know the wind when I hunt and never thought of it affecting my shot. I'm sure it does some but it has always worked out. I will be more observant of this and see. I've gotten one deer at about 150 yards in some wicked wind and the .223 did just fine.

Someone also mentioned they get some buck fever and like the larger round. I can understand this, My 25-06 does a lot more damage than the .223 so if your shot is off, the larger area of damage done by the larger round will help with the off shot (some). But how do you get nervous? I am not that old but I've noticed the past 5 years I don't get an adrenaline rush or anything. I just sit there, deer comes out (this step can take days), bang, get to work, then drink beer. Repeat until quota is full.

When I am meat hunting I don't get nervous, but if the day comes that I dont get nervous when a big buck steps out then I will quit hunting.
