What gear do y'all use when quail hunting in heavy prickly pear country? Looking for ways to protect my feet and legs, as well as the dogs feet.

Gave up on dog boots a long time ago. Dog's feet toughen up during the season and figure out what cactus are pretty quick. Use tweezers to clean dog's feet if avoidance fails. Leather, waterproof boots for me. Cordura boots don't last very long, at least the waterproof liners don't. Upland pants with double layer on fronts and on back of calves. My pants have buttons for suspenders and wear belt (for old and fat - suspenders are the greatest thing invented, waistline doesn't cut or bind and pants stay up). Also have waxed canvas chaps. But I don't wear the chaps in cold weather - too stiff.

Lewis dog boots keep out 90% of the burrs and cactus needles

I like to condition the dog's feet with tuff foot. It's pretty effective on grass burrs. Never had much problem with prickly pear even though it's there. I use the double faced cordura jeans to protect my legs.

My dogs have always been able to get pear thorns out mostly on their own. I have found that dog boots can be a bigger problem than none. If a pear thorn goes in a dog boot the dog can't get it out and sometimes a big thorn can beak off at the boot and you have to cut the boot off the dog or hurt the dog. Boots work very well on grass burrs though.

Smarter dogs. Big running, fast dogs are more likely to have pear problems. Boots don't work well. They only encourage dogs to step on smashed pear and they don't stop spines when it is wet. I use turtleskin leggings--used to use texas armor but they aren't available any longer. I've had spines pop out of my legs in April and May--good luck.
