For that price, a savage with accutrigger. For a little more, a used tikka.

I really like my Ruger American. You can get them under $300 and my 7mm-08 will shoot .75 MOA at 100 yards with factory Federal Fusion 120gr. It's not an heirloom or anything like that but unless I find a .308 predator to trade for its not going anywhere.

Those are good and if you find a Remington 788 in 243 or 308 you will have a shooter. Last I looked they are around that price.
TC Venture is another good one in around that range as well

Thank y'all for the responses. I've been looking at the ruger american and think it's the one I want. I've also looked at the savage axis and the Marlin xs7 too I'm just stumped on which would be best

I have a Marlin XL 7 in 25/06. I have hunted with it the last 5 years and though I have several rifles much prettier and higher priced, this is the 1 I grab when I walk out the door. I have always loved the 25/06 and wanted one in a short barrel and light weight and this little rifle fills the bill. I have a 3x9 Vortex on it and have never had to adjust the scope since the day I sighted it in. Nice trigger, especially for a cheaper gun. My BIL took my advice (for once...lol) and bought one 2 years ago and loves his as well. Look at them all. Handle them and whichever one feels the best to you, buy it, shoot it, and never look back. Good luck-Eddie

Ruger American. I have two in .243 standard version and .308 predator version. Both shoot fantastic, lightweight, easy on the recoil and pocketbook. I've killed 12 pigs in the last 3 weeks or so with the .308. I shoot 168 grain AMax and Winchester Ballistic Tips in the .308 and 100 grain Hornady Whitetail in .243

Remington 700 ADL. Cabelas has the combo with a cheap scope for around that price. I would much rather get that than the Ruger American or Savage Axis.

X2 on the Remington 700. I recently picked up a Remington 721 in 30-06 made in 1948 in a pawn shop for $150, after a clean up the gun is awesome, bores perfect and shoots 1 inch groups at 100. You can find a deal if you keep your eye out.

Ruger American!..GREAT rifle with some great features found on rifles at least 2-3x the price. I bought the .308 first year it came out cause I just needed a rifle quick for a last minute hunting opportunity that fell into my lap. Had fully intended to spend up to $1500 on good bolt rifle and scope combo and figured I'd just sell the Ruger American once I had more time to shop at my leisure. End result even after shopping with $ burning a hole in my pocket, was happily keeping the Ruger American and just upgrading my scope and binocs. Saved a lot of money and still have a great rifle! It still amazes me that the prices on them are so low.

Curious about your reasons? I have a very nice rifle, but wanted to buy one of these in 308 for a really cheap truck gun. Main motivation was Axis being the only cheapie that CDI makes a DBM kit for.

I'm really happy with my Ruger American in .243. Rested on bags, it put ten rounds in a 1.25" group at 100 meters with plain old winchester softpoints, 80 grains. It put 10 of the super cheap perfecta 100 grains into 1.5", same distance. With just a $40 tasco 3-9x40 from walmart, and I am not an expert or a competitor by any means. Aside from the fact that the gun will shoot, it just a nice, lightweight, ergonomic rifle. Bolt is a little stiff out of the box, but smoothed out realy nice. Mag feeds well. I sure can't complain about it.

I picked up the 700 ADL deal a couple of weeks ago in 243. That little thing will flat shoot. It was $413 out the door with A $35 mail-in rebate. Best part about the deal is when that barrel gets shot out, I have another donor action for a custom. I would be lying if I said I wasn't thinking ahead on that part.

I had GREAT luck with a Marlin XL7 in 30-06.

For about $100 more, you can get a Mossberg Patriot and Vortex Scope Combo at Academy. It comes with a nice, Walnut stock and checkering found on more expensive rifles. You're going to spend more than another bucks on a scope anyway. If you go look at one, you just might buy it. http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/mossberg...ldCatid=1634694

Savage with accutrigger is the best rifle in that price range. I've got a $400 Savage that shoots .5 MOA with factory loads. I've heard the Ruger American is a fine gun, but I'd be surprised if many of them are doing that. I don't think it's that uncommon for a Savage.
