What should I plant and when for a small dove plot in central tx that yeilds the most feed per acre? I will have the ability to irrigate it, but I don't want to constantly have to babysit it. Thanks!

Sunflowers. They should come back every year if you plant them. Easy to maintain and just disc them up about 3 weeks before the opener.

Sunflowers work great for me. I planted native Texas perennial Sunflowers around year 1999 and just disc the field after the first freeze and before the last freeze. They seem to come up in dry years as well as wet, although much thicker in wet years.

Native sunflowers should go in the ground now and I would plant 5lbs to an acre if this is the first time to plant this field. Then like said above, just disc it in Jan-Feb for the next years crop.
