Not in my time, but the old timers used to.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

We often took the tenderloins out of ours and grilled them the first night of opening day.

Killed a buck on a morning hunt and pulled a backstrap to chicken fry for breakfast that same morning.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I've always heard the term "camp meat" to describe a deer that wasn't tagged and consumed at camp.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Not the type of folks I like to hunt with. Wow! Don't you think it's possible to tag it and do everything by the book and still eat it in camp? Get off your high horse and quit judging people when you don't know what you are talking about!! Ok. Rant over
