Poor guy...
A harness and a life line type setup are the only way you can get me in a treestand. It's an easy safety measure, well worth the money IMO.
Adult late onset hunter. Why did I wait so long to get started?

Safety is a serious thing, not to be taken lightly. I've never used tree stands......I might if I had to, but don't really consider them safe. I certainly would use a harness if I was in one. And as far as the 10:00 am rule, a number one rule of all outdoor activity is to always tell people where you're going and what time you'll be back. That is just basic outdoor safety.

If it is like most of the hunting in the eastern part of NC most people use climbing stands on the huge old pine trees. When I was doing it years ago at Camp Lejuene we all used safety straps but not until we were up in the stand. I know there are new systems out there now but we hunted different trees all the time and were generally 25ft up our higher since there were no limbs close to the ground all you could do was go up to avoid detection.

That's a scary thing. I fell 12 feet from a tree stand and landed flat on my back, knocked me out for a while. When I woke it was dark, no idea how long I had been there. Not sure how it happened but was very glad to be alive and relatively uninjured. I still don't wear a harness, even though every time I climb up into a tree stand I'm reminded of the fall, maybe one day it will sink in more Slow learner are ya?

I usually will wear one, but there are times when I end up changing my mind and hunt a tree stand vs. my original plan to hunt the ground.
Hate to hear about this guy. hard the believe that he was 70 and hunting a tree stand without a harness.

I got two young kids, I just put up a new tree stand and have the harness with a hook around the tree above my head, AND and safety line to climb up and down with. Why risk it.

10 foot rule for me. No higher. Peace to the family of the gentleman that died.

That sucks. I had a 16' tripod come apart just as I got to the top of it, landed flat on my back in rock & cactus, I think the only reason I didn't pass out is because my old birddog was with us (down just to fill feeders & check stands) and when the stand fell, it took a big ol oak limb with it and the limb fell on my dog and he was yelping, he was fine, just scared him. I had a bad cut on my hand & leg and pooped blood for a couple of weeks but other than that, I was o.k. My wife picked cactus needles out of my back for weeks. This was about 2002.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.
