Well I bought a cheap call from Academy and went out to the ranch this weekend. I setup in a blind and blew on the thing for about 20 minutes. I did not see a thing. I changed locations and tried again. All of the cattle came but no varmints. I bought the squealing jackrabbit call. I have no experience and I just read the directions on the package. What can I do different next time? I went out at about 1600hrs or so and sat in a blind surrounded by brush. Thanks in advance for the help.

Try calling a lot less only around 20 to 30 seconds wait 10 minutes and then try agin. Remember a rabbit lungs are very small. You can check out Al varmint page and you can read a lot about it, or check out www.texasvarminthunter.comGood luck

I learn all my stuff by watching a guy names Les Johnson. He has a show called predator quest on the outdoor channel. His show comes on tonight at 7pm on time warner cable. or you could go to his web site and watch his shows online at www.predatorquest.com

watching videos or tv is a good way to learn. the sound doesnt have to be perfect, i had a buddy that sounded like a calf with his tail hung in the gate and he called in a lot of stuff, used to drive me crazy to listen to him. there will be days when you just cant call anything up.ive been calling for 30 years and still get skunked on occasion. I personaly havent had much luck calling from deer blinds. dont know if it distorts the sound , but i just dont like em. try a creek bottom, cliff, ot a brushy draw and see if that works,

Just remember Coyotes are at the top of the food chain, they make their living with their eyes, ears, and especially their nose. They can smell you for 1/2 mile, and they will not walk over your tracks. The main thing I can tell you is pay attension to the wind when calling coyotes, bobcats don't seem to pay much attension to it. Good Luck!

They WILL circle downwind...be sure to get them BEFORE they do that. I HIGHLY recommend Randy Andersons varmint hunting dvd's. He is pretty much an expert on them & his tips will get you success. He mainly does day hunting but it can also benefit night hunting some. I forgot what night hunting dvd's are out there.

The scenario you described is almost the same as when I killed my first coyote. I got there shortly before sundown, made one stand and nothing. Changed locations and called all of the cows to me. As the light faded, I noticed movement amongst the cows. A closer look revealed a coyote now standing and looking my direction. I had to wait a second for the cows to open up a clear shot, but I got her! It was a long two years, maybe more before I ever got my second one. By then I had gone digital.

call & move ....dont bust an area by walking through or over callin be discreet and attentive. Sometimes youll never even see movement, one second nothing....then bam there the dog is sittin on a tree line starin RIGHT AT YOU! know the wind, always consider it a factor, no matter is its blowin 1-2 MPH or 15+ (which i HATE calling in high winds but sometimes do have success) Be loud in certain scenarios, BUT NOT TOO LOUD! you dont want to sound fake, BUT you do want to be heard STAY STILL!!!! those guys can see you before you see them 9 times outta 10. Be prepared to shoot before you call. I like to lay down and call, usually under a cedar or against some good back-break. I will set my shot up in the "most likely" spot and begin calling. DONT OVERCALL! if you call for more than 20-30 min (IMO) w/o seeing anything...QUIETLY get up and move somewhere else. I get skunked all the time, but I prefer to day time call anyday over night! hope this helps!! ac

Some of the Nite Hunting videos are, Huntin the nite shift with Randy Watson, and Texas Predator Persuit. They are good videos. If hunting in the day time, always try to sit in the shade, you won't be as easy to spot, and always stop the animal and shoot it before it gets down wind. I have tried to bark coyotes to a stop, but most of the time it puts them in high gear, I have found it works better to either lip squeek or to give a (Bah) like you would use to stop a deer, sometimes when they are really comitted on comming in, you might have to do it a few times or even get louder, to get them to stop, but they don't spook over the sound.

get out there right bfore dark, ive called them a lot and have gotten pretty good at it, the best thing is an electric call, but ive called plenty with a mouth call so u can blieve me. call for 4-5 min with short 10-20sec breaks within those 5 min. after 5 min wait about 3min, call another 5 then wait three and then call for about three min. if you dont have a coyote by then, move on to a new spot. Other ways to get coyotes to come include- get sum new born pups and set it out there and when it makes noise, one will come, or a lil cat. but that method doesnt fly with peta

I disagree, if you have a blind to hunt from like a tree stand would be the best, use it, it is less likely that they will smell or see you when ur up in a tree. The ground is exactly where they will be looking and what they will smell.

They dont know that, and if you are using an electric call like i do, you can set the speaker on the ground. Even if you are using a mouth call, an elevated blind is much better, to supplement your attempts, you can put decoys on the ground like i have seen a white rag fool coyotes up to a certain distance. regardless getting your scent and body more undetectable from the coyote is more important than making the sound come from the ground.
