What is the fair market value for a Savage 99E 243 lever action. Manufactured in the late 60's. Above average condition?

Im not very knowledgeable on them as in what years/models brought the best money etc. but I tried to find one for a few years and I couldn't touch one for $300 in good condition. I don't think I ever found one for $400.

Ask the guys on the savage forum at 24 hour campfire.com My guess is 400-500. Late-model 99's had birchstocks detachable magazine they're not as desirable as the earlier ones. Late-model 99's had stocks detachable magazine they're not as desirable as the earlier ones.

I looked on Guns International any 99 less than $550 had significant deficits. Shooters in 300 savage ran 600 to 750, other more modern calibers, seemed about $100 more but were somewhat sparse. The dealers will negotiate so the actual sale price might be a bit less but I don't think significantly.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I wouldn't take less than $400 for any decent rifle in good condition. If yours is in good shape I wouldn't see $500 being out of line.

If I was in the market for that gun I'd feel lucky to land it for $500.

Quote from another Collector-
"The model 99E, the “economy” version of the 99. Some came with birch stock sets which in my eyes made them very ugly guns. The gun did not come equipped with a cartridge counter like all the other models did and it had no checkering. Also the 99E was never changed over to the tang safety after the one million mark like the rest as well. It still wore it’s lever type safety right up to the day it was discontinued. Now most E’s are in the post million serial range but a few I have seen had been made in 1959 and came with the counter on the side. Some were even seen with Schnabel forearms. These are the guns a lot of 99 lovers buy if they want to have a winter project, the y are cheap guns to find and you don’t feel bad about destroying any collector value by working one over into something you want more. A lot of 99E’s in 308 are bought for rechambering into 358 for instance."
Are you sure it 1960's - is it original?
The questions is all about age:
Check Lever boss code - Whats the SS# - early 1930's 99E models are much more money
What style of stock ? Checkering?
Brass rotor or another metal (aluminum) with or without window showing round count ? bass with window = more $
I would think a 99 in .243 ( very popular caliber) with a rotary magazine in above average condition would at most be $500
I love researching these guns - please contact me with any questions
Chris

More info:
Actually, the later Model E (intro'd in 1960) was made in four (4) configurations.
The first configuration looked almost exactly like the early "EG's" with a schnoble forearm, a pistol-grip butt-stock and no checkering... it was a very handsome rifle. However, the 1960 E-model did not have a pistol-grip cap and had a hard rubber butt-plate rather than a steel butt-plate like the EG's.
The 2nd variation (intro'd in 1961) of the later Model-E lacked the cartridge indicator like the early E and EG... and had a rounded forearm rather than the classic schnoble forearm.
The next configuration change was the introduction of mpressed checking stocks in 1966.
The final 99-E version had a Monte Carlo comb and a heavily-grooved forearm.
