I'm pretty sure its legal, not sure, to put a game cam on public land, but has anyone done it?? If so what problems have you had with others bothering your cams or what precautions do you take?? Just wondering, particularly the national forests of East Texas.

Welcome to the THF. Hope you enjoy the site.

Not sure if anyone on here has tried game cams on Public Land, but with the reported number of incidents of theft of Game Cams from private Land, I would not think that a Game Cam would last very long on Public Land.

Someone may be along with some better advice on the subject.

Yes, I am doing it right now. I can't imagine why it wouldn't be legal, but I haven't checked. I make sure to put mine in out-of-the-way places.

I have a friend who puts out 2 game cams every year on the White Oak WMA and hasn't had a problem yet. Of course he puts his boat in the creek and has a 30 minute ride to his favorite spot, where hardly anyone ever hunts. He has some big boys on his cams every year.

I've been involved with some research projects that included trail cameras in some of the national forest. Not illegal, but you do run the risk of your cameras getting LEGS! If you use them, I'd recommend you set them at least 10ft. off the ground so that if someone wanted the camera, THEY would have to exert a lot more effort in getting to it!

Isn't white oak creek draw only for whitetail?? So I guess the bottom line for public land is, you can put them up, but put them else where no one will find them?

i doubt there's any legislation regarding trail cams as they dont pose any real problems and are relatively new technology. the bottom line is use them at your own risk because they may get stolen.

I would put them in places where you almost have to gps the location to remember where it is. People have really been stealing stuff like crazy in east tx over the last few years even behind lock and key.

I thought I was crazy for putting one out on public land I guess I'm not the only one. Left mine out for only two weeks then took it down but plan to put it back out this summer. Might put two out but I will try and hide it not sure how I'd put it up high it would be troublesome to check.

Its draw only for rifle, but bow season is open to all with the $48 permit and a license.

If you have a game camera and never use it because you're afraid it is going to get stolen, then it's as good as stolen already, isn't it?

The section of NF I hunt is 2500 acres. Almost all of this is heavy undergrowth. I like the odds of someone NOT finding my camera.

Probably a good idea to go with infared, just in case someone walks by, especially before daylight or after. No flash would help to conceal it. Just a thought

Its not illegal, but you better not be real attached to you game cam either cause theres a decent chance it will get stolen.

Camera on public land would be awesome to see the big boys sneaking around.....but I PROMISE, if someone sees it or finds it, it will be gone.

If I came across someone else's game camera -- it wouldn't be gone. Is EVERYONE less honest than I am?

I might would leave a note in one w/ a phone number if I had a camera close by... might be nice to meet whoever owns the camera and share photos.

I wouldn't take it if I found one on public land.

But it's not the guys on this forum you have to worry about. It's the locals in there at night chasing hogs or deer or coons or coyotes or cats ..... or anything else they happen to light up. I guarantee you they will take it.

I had mine stolen on private property. Just think if it were on public land. They were caught vandilizing my feeder so they ripped the front off at the hinges and took the camera part. Man I wish I could find that cam.

The difference is that on private land, you often set the cams up on feeders, which makes them easy to spot.

I worry about mine on private property, I would be very nervous if I had one on public land. I wouldn't put a high-end camera out!
