You still "got it". Great job. You ever played a joke on someone and "planted" one of your points? Never! I've also never sold one, I can spot a reproduction easy but many a poor soul has spent good money on a reproduction. A real point of that quality would bring 2,000 easy. Are you telling me this could be worth a couple grand?!?!? An old back-tang knife like that will bring over 1,000.

Great looking point, I'd say you definitely still "have it". Nice to know there is another 'knapper' here. I don't knapp very much any more, but still enjoy sitting down for an hour or so every once in a while to make a point. Of course, I have to replace my hunting points from time to time as well. Impressive

An authentic Clovis of that quality, you could add another zero to that price. Nubbed down field grade Clovis sell for more than $2000.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

Are you telling me this could be worth a couple grand?!?!? [/quote] Depends on quite a few things (material, where found, blade type, original type/not reworked, etc), but it does appear to be a fairly nice specimen. Would like to see the other side and a view from the side (to determine thin-ness). It is certainly smooth on the side displayed (not stacked). It would be worth having it COA'd by someone like Dwain Rogers. Flint.

Great thread. When I was a young man, I used to hunt harder for artifacts than critters on any given lease.
Those who give up liberty for security deserve neither.

So cool... We just acquired a new lease SW of Buffalo Gap and found what I can only describe as a work station....lots of knapped rock and at least one incomplete arrow head...we haven't spent a lot of time working the hill top over as we were only there to consider a deer blind placement but I'm headed down to do more work next weekend and intend to spend some time digging around...I could stand to find a few $2,000 rocks...

If you can get permission to 'dig'...you will do so much better than just collecting 'surface finds'. We used to own some property at the head waters of Bull Creek in Austin, Texas, I found every one of these points/blades in one day (late 70's) around an old midden we discovered. Buddy of mine has a nice collection of Montells, Marshalls, Bulverde and Perdernales from that same site. A lot of artifacts in Texas. So many places we used to be able to hunt (with permission) I.E. Georgetown on the North and South San Gabriel river, certain areas along Onion Creek and others...are now all grown up and covered with housing.

I found this one yesterday near a tank dam that busted from all of this rain. By far the best one I have found:

It would be worth having it COA'd by someone like Dwain Rogers. I don't have a whole lot of faith in Dwain Rodgers, too many of the pieces he's COA'd and sold look to much like his style of knapping. I've been to 3 different knappin's and seen him whipping out big blades. He loves Cornertang's.

He has an affection for corner tangs...and has one of the best 'authentic' collections around.
Anyone who has collected 'genuine' artifacts and ALSO knapps...should be able to spot a 'fake/reproduction' fairly quickly...or at least have 'pause' about it.
There are however...some 'fakes' out there where the person who produced it...took the time to (try to) create 'apparent age' in the piece I.E. staining, patina, etc..., most do not.
But...certainly you would want to be careful before laying out large sums of cash to obtain an artifact.

I was collecting them long before I started knapping and have seen several pieces pawned off as authentic, when I see a fake piece in a collection it put's doubt on the entire collection. Mack Tussinger of Oklahoma was the king of selling fake pieces he even had the museums buffaloed. The ability to make a piece appear original is getting better (not the right choice of word's) and with the value's places on some pieces it's created a black market for deception.

Certainly agree with your position on 'fakes' but that still would not affect the ability of someone to COA a piece for someone else.
And you are correct, prices and interest in artifacts in recent years (15-20 years) has skyrocketed...which in turn brings out folks who are unscrupulous. But without 'proof'...I would never throw out any names on the internet.
I started hunting/collecting about 40 years ago. Things sure have changed since then.
But back to the original topic, that is a fine point you made. Knapping is a 'perishable' skill to some degree...so if you haven't knocked out a point in quite some time (I've gone a year or more between points) it can take a bit to get back into the groove, not that you forget techniques or principles.
