If you see one like this free ranging do you shoot it or let it walk. I'm axis stupid and have got invited to go on a hunt....and would like to get invited back.

The best thing to do, is not ask us, but ask the person that invited you.
I don't know about some folks but I believe many would call that buck a shooter.
To me that appears to be a really good quality axis buck, he appears to be an older animal, and if your host/the land owner says it is okay, shoot it.
Some of the folks with more experience, hopefully will chime in on this one, but an axis like that, in the 26 to 30 inch or so range with the lenghth of the brow tines that buck, in my opinion would be a good mountable, trophy. JMO.

that is definatly a shooter.
in many places in the hill country, axis are more common thanj whitetail.
i hunt on one place in bandera county and we see way more axis and blackbuck than whitetail.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

This place is up around Rocksprings and I am going to go with the landowners grandson. The only thing I was told was shoot what I want as long as it has spots. (They don't shoot them, they just feed 'em....and I don't wanna be a peckerhead and shoot something that will get me harrassed)
With us planning to build a house within the next 2 years....I guess the question I should have asked was... would this be a mountable axis to perhaps be used to decorate "the man room/game room".

That's a good looking axis to me  I'd display him proudly. His second point on his left side is really nice looking. Good luck on your hunt, and IMO, he'd look great in your new house.

What about the fact that he's in velvet? Is it customary to shoot them in velvet? Are they like whitetail in that they're out-of-velvet in the autumn months?

thats a fine trophy, and yes, alot of people shoot them in velvet when there full grown like that.
don't shoot it if it has bulbs on the end of his tips, but if there pointy then generally its okay

Well the date on the pic is correct...so I imagine that one has kicked the bucket (just the only pic I still had saved in email)....but I have seen pics the guy has shown me of ones from this year and a cpl are very similar in body and horn size. Should be interesting when I decide to go them.
