Which part of the county? Game? Deer, turkey, quail in huntable numbers, dove and tons of stinking hogs. Quality and numbers will depend on where you are hunting in the county.

I hunt not to far from there in George West. The numbers are not a s good as the hill country but comparable. The quality of deer is much better than the hill country deer. Just using hill country as a comparison don't know where you hunted before. Of course you most likely will have pigs and javelina for sure. Coyotes are not rare, lots of doves, turkey, and occasional bobcat.

Met a guy who lives out of state who has some land "near Goliad off 239" who might consider leasing me his land for hunting, provided I do some favors for him. He has never hunted the property, but just told me there are "deer on the property" and he has seen "plenty of hogs". Neighbors have cultivation, he doesn't - pretty much fallow for years. That's all I know. Could be a bust, just a lot of work - could be a real gem.

Which direction from Goliad on 239? NW or SE of town could make a huge difference in numbers of deer and quality. Also is it close to the river or away from it?

When I get through Goliad/Beeville I know I got the trip whipped. But your right its not the same area but shouldn't too much difference in general.

GW is around 24 miles or so. The amount and size of deer varies greatly in the county though.

I believe that's where stxranchman is, but he knows almost nothing about deer or deer hunting. He is the guy to see though if you have questions about jackrabbits or caracaras
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

What kind of "favors" does he want you to do? What's the price of the lease provided you are able to help? Do you have an idea of the lease size? Would you want any assistance from say... a fellow hunter such as myself...

I have a buddy whose family owns land between Mission Valley and Goliad that I have hunted many times and never seen bucks like those pictures. In fact, I hunted there last December and saw about five different bucks but two will never be legal to kill. They do have quite a few turkeys.

STex, where are those?
We just leased between Beeville and Kenedy from a THF member. That's about 40 mins NW of Goliad but haven't really seen the wildlife yet. Will let you know when I do.

If you leased the place that was just on here then I am about 12-15 miles south of you at most. You are not that far from Goliad, maybe 20-25 minutes NW of Goliad at most. I am 20 minutes west of Goliad.

10-4. Hope I see a few like the ones in your pics! You'll have to manage the herd aggressively to do that. STX's bucks are large and way above average for that part of the state.

Actually they are not. There are a few much bigger deer killed in the area to my SE,S, West and North that are never reported. They will be on large ranches that are hunted by family only or not hunted at all. To my south just a couple miles is the start of some very large ranches, those ranches are not leased for the main part. They have some really nice deer on them. Two seasons ago there was a buck I know to the south of me that was 160's gross killed and then to my west about the same distance was an upper 170's class 25" inside spread buck killed, both on LF. Those are the only ones I know about.

Wow, that area has really come around then from what I remembered back in the early - mid 90s. Then again, all of TX has made pretty big strides when it comes to harvesting of big bucks. Sure a lot has to do with supplemental feeding.

Wow, that area has really come around then from what I remembered back in the early - mid 90s. Then again, all of TX has made pretty big strides when it comes to harvesting of big bucks. Sure a lot has to do with supplemental feeding. No it has to do with large ranches that were hunted by family or never hunted. There was a occasional big buck poached by a local back in the 60-70's that was known about. Others were killed by family and kept secret. I grew up 5 miles from where his lease is. The area to his south is where I live now and it always had good deer due to ranch sizes there. One ranch was 17,000+ acres that was not hunted at all up until the 90's, it was poached some by locals up till then. That area to the east of where I grew up always had deer where as the area to my north, south and west had very few growing up. To his north was all old farm land that had very few deer, now it is grass pastures in various stages of regrowth. It had very few deer until the 80's, now the area to his south will show a deer to 17 acres on county WMA survey counts. Some pockets will have more and some will have less density. Now with AR's, rain and cover it is getting more deer. Deer get age also on some places in that area. A 120-140 class buck can be found if the buck is 5+, a 140+ can be found in the right year and right location. There is another THF member that hunts about 6-7 miles NW of him that has taken some nice bucks for that area and gotten bigger ones on TC that were not killed. I was surprised at the age classes he had in that area where I rarely ever saw a deer in my lifetime growing up till now. Still do not see many on the highways in that area.

Impressive Ranch, your bucks like just as nice as many nicer deep South Texas bucks that I have seen over the past 30+ years.
