Well I bought my newborn son a Savage .243 yesterday. I could not get the scope installed when I made the purchase. I have several scoped rifles but I have never mounted one myself. I have been checking the net and I am amazed by the amount of choices. I just want a mount and a decent set of rings that will hold a Nikon prostaff. I was going to get the weaver base plates. It takes two of them and they are about 8 bucks for the two plus the rings. Is this the way to go? I thought 45 bucks for rings and a base maybe too cheap. I have also looked at the burris two piece mount. I have plenty of tools but I have never wrenched on a gun. I just want to buy the items that will mount without having to make any modification to screw or base length. I prefer the look of a two piece base. Savage lists the part numbers for the bases for the rifle. Is this weaver set up the way to go? Any help or insight would be appreciated.

JG

Look at the Talleys. I don't think there is a better setup IMHO.

All but a very few of my rifles are equipped with Weaver bases and "Weaver-style" rings (many manufacturers make rings compatable with Weaver bases...Tasco, Simmons, Leupold, B-Square, etc). For your light-kicking .243, the economy rings are fine.

I've come to appreciate the simplicity and light weight of the Weaver system. Unlike the Redfield/Leupold "twist-in" steel mounts, the Weaver style allows the hunter to detatch his scope in the field with a coin, use his open sights if needed, or mount a spare scope if the original scope fails. His scope will retain its original sight setting--I've proven this myself more than once in the field, but I always recheck my zero to be sure.

For many years, I always carried two rifles on my hunting trips. Nowadays, I only carry ONE rifle, but I take along an extra scope and rings as a scope failure is far more likely to occur than a rifle failure.

Rings and bases are easily bought online from Midway, Natchez, etc, and even EBay.

If you are going to go with the Leupolds, then get the Dual Dovetails not the ones that have the wind adjustment on them. I have never had anything but problems with the wind adjustment screws loosing up on me.

Bless your heart, all newborns need a rifle and .243 is a great cartridge to cut teeth on.

God is so good to me.

I like the Leupold setup. The dual dovetails are excellent. I have never had any trouble with the ones that have the windage screws either. The weaver setup is ok, but I prefer the others, the scope does not seem to rotate as much when you tighten up the rings making it a little eaiser to get the scope in the right position.

I ended up getting the Burris standard bases and signature rings. I ordered from SWFA and they should be here this week. I will probably put them on and then attempt a scope. I think I am going to have the local range bore sight it once I get it mounted.

Get yourself a set of gunsmithing screwdrivers first. The blades are ground square on them instead of tapered like a conventional screwdriver. It will prevent you from marring the screw heads and doing an amateurish job!

I was thinking about wrapping my screwdrivers with tape to prevent the marring. I am also going to pull the stock to adjust the accutrigger. I will check out some of those screwdrivers though. Thanks

when you check to make sure the reticle is level, use a carpenters level on the reciever to level the gun. then hang a plumb from a door frame and line up the vertical post with the string. also, use a torque wrench when tightening
