I have heard of a lot of problems with the Nova. Twice I have hunted with two different guys that have Novas and they were down to single shots by the end of the hunt. I wouldn't give you a nickel for a Nova.

Save your money and go for a semi auto. You will be glad you did in the long run. I have an extreama (first version) and it functions flawlessly. It eats everything I feed it and so far has i have had no issues. Besides the reduction in recoil sure makes follow up shots a lot easier. Some of the 3 1/2's can put a pretty good thump on you.

I had an 870 express for 10 years. decided to buy a benelli Nova. Hated the gun because for some reason it locked up when you were trying to eject a spent shell. Sold it and went back to my 870 and will never buy another brand of pump shotgun. I know that you are not looking at the express or nova but that is my 2 cents worth on the different brands (pumps).

NOVA. I have beat the crap out of mine and never had a problem what so ever. i even froze it solid one time so i poured coffee on it and get on whacking em. and if ever a problem does arise you can have the nova apart in under a minute in the field. All my friends that went with the 870s wish they hadnt.

What are you shooting now? Is there anything wrong with it?
If you already have a serviceable pump I would recommend saving for a semi-auto.
If you have been shooting a nice wood stock upland gun don't want to damage it then get a pump.

I'm going to buy a Remington SPR 453 ($398 at Walmart). Need a good semi-auto that I don't have to be too careful with. Wish I had bought it before last season.

I've had an 870 super mag for two years now. Locks up all the time, only way to fix it is to hold the forearm and bang it against something. The last goose hunt I went on I only could get one shot off because it wouldnt eject 3 1/2s. Oh and did I mention it rusts like a SOB. I have a buddy that has the 870 super mag and he has the exact same problems. Goin for the nova next year, all my huntin buddies have one and swear by it.

I've hunted with an 870 for 20+ years. First one was the normal blued version and we would hunt down at the coast. I'd start driving south and it would rust up. My second one I had camo dipped and it has been great.
I just purchased a Winchester SX3 semiauto and love it.

I would go into the Tradeing post section and buy the over/under for next season. Title of thread is "guns for sale"
"wack 'em, stack 'em, pack 'em

crazy horse shoots a double barrel 10 guage I have personally seen that gun drop ducks that hadn't even started their migration yet and he shot them from a blind in Ennis. Hit the weight room and start now by letting a horse kick you in the shoulder 20 or so times a day and you should be ready for it.

870... every season! I do not want to take a "nice" gun into mud, water, and ice.

Nova all the way. I have had mine go under water twice and nothing happened after that of course i do clean it after every hunt. But i have converted about 4 of my hunting buddies to nova and they love them how can you say you wouldnt give any money for one i would trade my for anything.... (well maybe something) but NOVA all the way bad a gun and will come through and work everytime no matter what the conditions

If those two were my choices, I'd take the 870 every day of the week and twice on Sunday. On top of that, I have not read or heard anything but glowing praise for that XCR coating on both rifles and shotguns.

Benelli or Beretta autoloaders, you can't go wrong with either choice.
No bad days hunting

IMO... too many people ignore the Mossberg 835 ulti-mag as far as a 3.5" pump. 870's are a good gun, but they were not specifically designed around the 3.5" shell. The sole purpose of the Mossy 835U-M is to shoot the magnums. You get a ported barrel out of the deal most of the time, too. In all reality, you just have to get out there and mount the guns a few times to see what fits you best... kinda like wives! just kidding
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Chump we've got an 870 and a Mossberg 500 waterfowl. I hate the Mossy and love the 870. The Mossy doesn't pick up the next shell everytime. I'm going autoloader next year, not because there is anything wrong with my 870, but because I'm just getting older and that follow up shot just doesn't come as fast as it needs to sometimes.
