If you're not going subsonic, 6.8 has every advantage over .300. Both cartridges were designed to perform out of "short barrels" but the 6.8 can still reach out and touch your target. Effective kill range for 6.8 is about 350yds IMO, which is a bit further than .300Blk but the 6.8 shoots much flatter. Zero for 200 and hold dead-on out to 350 and you'll be in the kill zone.

So a 6.8 in a 11.5" barrel is substantially better for hunting under 250 yards than a 8.5" 300 BO? Just trying to clarify.... Absolutely, yes.

what sold the .300blk over the 6.8 for me is the only thing you change is the barrel, BCG, mags, everything is the same on the .300BLK vs. 6.8...
I've had both and prefer the .300BLK

I found this while searching for some ballistics data.....from this study it's pretty hard to vote against the 300 BLK for under 250 yards. I'm curious as to what exactly the difference the 6.8 would have ballistically....? According to this study the 300's MPBR is 193 yards +/- 2.5" so the idea that it drops way off after 100 seems to be incorrect. http://300aacblackout.com/resources/300-BLK.pdfFor me, if the 6.8 doesn't perform substantially better in an SBR there is really no reason to use it. The 300 BLK has all the advantages at that point....cost, components, suppressed vs unsuppressed shooting, shorter barrel, etc.

If it seems like a good fit for you as a hunter, go for it.
For me, cost/components/suppressed aren't really issues. I'll buy a new upper and BCG whether it's 300blk or 6.8, so the interchangeability of parts is a moot point. I do all my shooting with supersonic rounds, so there's no difference between the 300blk and 6.8 there. And I'm not impressed enough with subsonic 300blk to worry about it.
Supersonic 300blk is a formidable round that definitely stands toe to toe with 6.8. Within 250, it's not going to matter much which you pick on a ballistic basis. 300blk is getting far more popular than 6.8, so from an availability point of view, 300blk is going to win the race for cheaper ammo with far more diverse loadings before long (if it hasn't already).
So 300blk is probably the better choice.

I run a 6.8 w/12.5" barrel and suppressed. Kill roughly 200 pigs a year with it, this last year hurt my average LOL. I hunt mostly at night with NV and thermal so shots are 40-100 yards. Everyone I know with a 300BO that hunts hogs has traded them for the 6.8. My opinion is it's a superior hunting cartridge over the 300BO.

This was at max charge and I was getting flattened primers and ejector swipes. I stopped loaded development at 30 grains of AA220 with CCI 41 primers. I will reduce my loads to 28-29 grains of powder in the future

I am running hand loaded Barnes 95 gr TTSX, AA2200, CCI 41 and SSA brass. I do not know what this load is running but it is on the hotter side. Before this I was running same recipe except with the 85 gr Barnes TSX. It was also on the hotter side and running 2950 FPS. I changed to the 95 gr TTSX because they open up at speeds as low as 1600-1700 FPS.

My current is 29.5 gn of AA2200 with 95 TTSX's.

My current is 29.5 gn of AA2200 with 95 TTSX's. I started seeing pretty good swipes at 29.5. I changed to a SLR adjustable gas block and added the rounded ejector made by JP. I've only tested the new setup with the 29.5 grains and wanting getting as bad of swipes. They started showing after a 5 round dump with a can. Since I don't do mag dumps with the 6.8, this might be a solution....

I run an 8.2" 300blk with an AAC SDN6 suppressor and 110g Barnes VORTX ammo. Haven't shot at any animals over 150yards yet (haven't needed to). Haven't had a problem inside 150 on deer and pigs. I've shot a 16" 6.8 unsuppressed using SSA ammo and it's was a nice low recoil gun. Wouldn't hesitate to use either for deer and pigs, but there's no way I would trade my 300blk SBR for a 6.8 SBR. I might own both though, just for the heck of it.
