I have a benelli nova and i use it for my duck and dove hunting gun. I went to bass pro bought a choke for turkey and the choke was to long so i ended up taking it back. Is the gun i have a turkey gun at all or should i look into buying another shotgun specifically for turkey hunting?

The Nova will work.....you don't need a special turkey gun.
I used a Mossberg 935 with just a full choke and took 2 turkeys last season.......

just make sure to pattern your gun....

Spend time with the ones you love. Time is not guaranteed.

Is this a trick question? Just teasing!!! Seriously, if you can afford it why pass up the opportunity to buy another shotgun? I personally could not afford to buy another shotgun.. well I could afford the gun but not the divorce that would come with it. My wife has a defective strand in her DNA that allows her brain to grasp the idea that "too many guns" is a possibility. As to the question of your gun being a "turkey gun" ... the best way to answer that question is to spend some time at the pattern board.

Ya reading yalls and other peoples posts im realizing that finding your spread is really important. To be honest with you though i have never patterned my gun. im just assuming i get a peice of plywood with a large enough paper target and shoot and different yardages. If im wrong on that i would love some help thanks again

Yardage isn't near as important as finding the load that shoots best in your gun. 20 to 30 yards is a good ref. point.

Your correct, they sell turkey targets, basically the neck and head....stick it up on a board and see what load gives you the best kill pattern. I have GREAT luck using super full Turkey choke on both of my Rem. 870 super mag and running 3" #5 shot in Winchester Supreme High Velocity Turkey loads...patterns very well for me out to 50 yrds...but I like calling them into my lap, so be sure to keep your head down and aim just like you would a rifle....because a tight pattern out to 50yrds is a VERY tight pattern at 8yrds.

I have an 870 SPS with the factory full choke and I tried 3 different loads. The one that consistently puts the pellets in the neck and head on targets at 40 yards is the one I shoot. That said all my turkeys but one have been 20 yards or less. Most less. Last year though one big gobbler fell at 41 lasered yards in Missouri and I only knew that from trying and patterning multiple loads.

The Nova is fine. Kill your bird with the load that shoots best in it!

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

hey go to cabelas, they have a lot of turkey specific chokes. i picked up a primos "TIGHT WAD" choke for my benelli nova about an hour ago for 10 bucks. They have a lot of chokes to choose from and a lot for bennelli/ beretta Shot guns. They are on the last isle on the right hand side of the bargan cave.

ok cool let me know what kind you seem to like i think i spent like 40 bucks on one that was to long and now its just sitting in my truck somewhere. Is it the extended choke or just the one that fits in the barrell and you cant even see. oh and im new at the whole spring turkey thing so cut me some slack. I have been but with a buddy who new what he was doing and i just didnt pay enough attention. but ya shoot and track let me know how you patterns turn out and this weekend i will head up to cabelas and do some experimenting.
thanks again

I turkey hunt with a Benelli Nova as well. I use the H.S. Strut "UnderTaker" choke. Be sure you check the back of the package on the choke to make sure you grab the one that fits your gun. You have a great gun. Good luck on Turkey season this year!

Did you make sure that the choke you picked up was able to handle high density loads like heavy shot?

so i shot the diffrent loads today. the best pattern i came up with was the federal mag shok 3.5" 2oz of shot. that held the tightest pattern with my 28in barrel bennelli nova.

the 2nd best pattern was the bismuth 3.5" magnum load.

3rd place was the hevi 13 load. 3" and remember you the same 1.5/8 oz amount of shot as with the bismuth load.

all three loads were shot with a Primos "TIGHT WAD" xtra full choke. Hope this helps and you dont have to buy 3 diffrent loads. maybe try 3 other loads and fill me in.

I would HIGHLY recommend that everyone should try a Patternmaster choke tube. They come in different choke sizes and for every gun. Pattern this choke to your standard chokes and you will definitely put the patternmaster in your gun and leave it. The difference can easily be seen and felt. ALL of your pellets will arrive at once, and don't be surprised to take the head off a turkey at 25 yards. They have a website that tells how they work. I promise you've never seen anything like it.
