Is there any down side to chipping your dog? Making an investment in a new lab and am thinking about getting him chipped.

No down side that I know of. But a collar with name plate is a must also and will more than likely get the dog home faster.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Haven't read into it recently but I have heard that there are different companies that can only be read by certain scanners.
Mines tattooed so I don't have to worry about that.

My dogs are chipped and every collar that they wear has a brass name plate riveted on. (leather collar around the house, waterproof hunting collar and ecollar) I think I read somewhere that most all chips/scanners nowadays are read by others... but as long as you have at least two ways on the dog that they can be id'd... you should be good.

Mine are chipped. Took them to the shelter and vet to have the chip checked. Both read it. They had been chipped by the owner.

Mine have chips, collars, and tattoos. I don't think the tattoo would get them home. I would definitely chip the dog if it is worth something to you. All pounds check for chips.

I have this on my lab, and I have mixed reviews of it. The unit says its waterproof but I have had to replace mine after less then a year because of my dog going swimming with it, so now we just put it on her when we are not at home and she is in the backyard. overall the unit works pretty good but get ready for mass texts and alerts if your dog travels a lot.

Muffin is chipped but Cracker is not. I lost Cracker for 3 days in south Texas. The rancher called from the field when she jumped into his truck. She has a snug collar with phone numbers on the name tag.
I know that they make some of that fiction I read in books. I read in one that the chips had a life span of about 3 years.

Our vet wanted over 100 dollars to chip our lab. We had her chipped at the local shelter for $15. She has been scanned and it works fine. No down side that I know of.

I know that they make some of that fiction I read in books. I read in one that the chips had a life span of about 3 years. When chips first became available many years ago, they had a bad habit of migrating to other places. I remember one dog whose chip was properly placed atop the shoulder area and within a year the nomadic chip had moved back to a rear leg. The design of the newer chips make them stay put where they belong, and they last indefinitely....certainly much longer than a dog's lifespan. The early chips also tended to tend to have one of two frequencies, depending on the maker, and the detecting devices could only read the frequency of just one type. Nowadays, the detectors will usually read both frequencies. Every pet or hunting dog should be chipped--tattoos are largely obsolete now--and a brass nameplate on the collar is a good idea too. Every pound, SPCA, veterinarian, etc will have a chip reader. And the nameplate may keep your trigger-happy neighbor from shooting your dog, should it get loose.
