This was by far one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Some friends and I hunted the West Texas big bobcat contest over the weekend, and even though we didn't win any money, we all feel on top of the world right now. We started calling at noon on Saturday in Val Verde County, and our first two sets turned out 1 dead fox, 1 miss, and a couple quick glimpses at some fox that we were unable to shoot at. After those two sets we were skunked on the next 3. It was looking disappointing about 15 minutes in to another set when my buddy and I spotted something that didn't look quite right. We were set up on the edge of a small dry creek bed, while our other two team members were on the opposite side, facing the opposite direction. My buddy had a shotgun, and I had a rifle. This something was walking rather non-chalantly down a road on the opposite side of this creek bank, about 35 yards away and we only caught a 1/2 second glimpse as she passed a narrow opening between a couple cedars. All we could tell was it was orange and didn't look quite right. Four steps and about 3 seconds later she hit a small clearing and that was all the time I needed. She went down hard with one shot to the shoulder with my 22-250. My buddy followed up with a couple double ought buckshot shells for insurance. We had called a mountain lion in to 35 yards in broad daylight, and it was now dead in front of us. My buddies on the opposite side couldn't see what went down, and as the two of us raised up, we started yelling and immediately ran towards the downed lion. We knew what we had done, but it took a while for it to sink in. From the time we initially spotted it until the time I shot was 5 seconds, max. It happened so fast we didn't even have time to get nervous. After the shot, my heart was racing and I thought I was going to hyperventilate because I was breathing so hard. The adrenaline was sure flowing in my veins. We took pictures, admired her for a while, and went about our business. We hunted hard until the next morning, and came up short on the big bobcat but we could really care less right now. Big thanks to my pards on this one. It was definitely a team effort and I just happened to be the one that was lucky enough to get a shot on her first.

If ducks had horns I'd probably be a duck hunter. I am a horrible deer hunter. Probably the worst. Ever.

If you shoot a young deer because a neighbor will shoot it, you are that neighbor.

Walter Definitely getting her mounted. Just not sure on specifics of how I'm going to have it done yet.

Not the big bobcat, but who cares. Good job. That is definitely a shot that you don't want to miss.

Thanks everyone. I want to add that we are currently looking for sponsors for our team. We will be entered in quite a few of these contests this year and if you would be interested in letting us represent your hunting/wildlife services or products, please let me know.
