Just curious...

1. What brand of dog food do y'all feed your dogs?
2. How much protein is in it?
3. How much fat?

I know that dog diets are more complex than just protein and fat, but I have a friendly debate with a buddy about what are common percentages for a working dog. Please mention your dogs breed, sex, and weight in your answers if you don't mind.

Thanks.

My boy is now on Taste of the Wild Wetland Formula
Protein - 32%
Fat - 18%
I have really struggled with his food as he is an extremely picky eater. He was on a food from Bass Pro - good price but he did not like it too much and it really caked on his teeth. We went to Canidae and he did not eat it very good. He absolutley scarfs the TOTW and there are no grains in the food.

Me too. 3 cups at night, maybe 4 cups depending on out she looks weight wise. 3 cups at night is pretty much the standard.

I tried the Purina Pro Plan shredded
My 3 dogs liked it when I first started feeding it, and all 3 seemed to get burned out on it at the same time. I switched back to the Performance Pro Plan. They have gone thru half the bag and are now turning their nose up at it too.
I guess I'll have to find a new brand.
I did buy a small bag of Iams at Wally World and my dogs seemed to like it. I did try them on some Eukaneuba also and they liked it. I'm so cornfused

I'm still on puppy food right now Purina Pro Plan. But the Adult food that I like is Eukanuba Sporting Formula. I think it's 30% protein and like 24% fat(or something really high like that). I would only recommend it if you exercise them a lot other wise they will just put on all the fat.

+1. Only now it's called Eukanuba 30/20 Performance. 30% protein/20% fat. I do not believe it has any byproducts and it also contains glucosamine and chondroitin. Since switching from Pro Plan Performance my dog has done much better. 4 year old CLF weighing in at 60.5 lbs as of this morning.

20 month old female Deutsch Drahthaar, 53#

Feeding Innova adult
25.42% Protein
14.28% Fat

I have been really happy with this feed. My dog has always been lean, but during this current hunting season I think she is a little too lean. I am supplamenting with some of that raw dog food (Nature's Variety).

If your food is doing what it's supposed to why would you need to supplement? Wouldn't you just feed her more or change to a higher fat/protein ratio food?

Stink,
kbobbjr is right, I switch foods during the year depending on the activity level. during hunting season i increase protien and fat content to keep up with what the dogs are burning. Even on an extended hunting trip I will boil chicken thighs and mix in the dry kibble to make sure they eat enough and also add some additonal protien and fat.

sounds like you need to increase her protien/fat levels some because if shes going leaner than you think she could, she could be depleting her fat stores and burning muscle.

I agree. She has been good up until our Kansas trip. She lost a little and she has seemed a little thin. I started to give her the raw as a supplament a week or two ago and she looks good now, but I don't want to have to continue doing this. As for giving her more, I went from feeding her 2000 calories a day to letting her eat as much as she wanted. It didn't help. I need to look for a "hunting season" food.

Yea they have changed the name on it a couple of times. I haven't bought it since I got my pup about 6 months ago. I loved it though. Coco was solid as a rock.

Well of course a dog is going to like a new food. If you keep changing brands of dog food when your dog turns it's nose up at it, you will be changing foods every half bag their whole life. Pic a food they will eat and is healthy. When they turn their nose up at it, oh well, they will eat when they get hungry enough. That is why I hate when dog food companies come out with taste tests. Well of course my dog will chow down the new food or pic the new food out of the old food.

See, I did learn something from all of these food threads we've had on here.
