My mom is getting interested in hunting and recently got a crossbow. I tried to talk her into getting a bow and she said she tried to pull back one at Bass Pro with 45lb draw on it and could not budge it. My question is can she get some kind of permit or something like that so that she can use her crossbow with the rest of us while we are bowhunting during the archery only season.

Only if she has an upper limb disability.

She can use it during gun season, but other than that, Big Tony is right.

Gotta put some lead in the air if you're going to get anything!

If she has a medical history of it and her doctor will give her a note stating that she has an upper limb disability then she is good to go.

Taken from TPWD website:

Crossbow:

Any person may use a crossbow to hunt game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds) during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season. Telescopic sights are lawful.
ONLY a person with an upper-limb disability may use a crossbow to hunt deer and turkey during the Archery Only Open Season, provided the person, while hunting, has in their immediate possession a physician's statement certifying the extent of the disability.
An upper-limb disability is a permanent loss of the use of fingers, hand, or arm in a manner that renders the person incapable of using lawful archery equipment.
A crossbow is lawful for game animals and game birds (except migratory game birds and as provided above), provided:
the crossbow has a minimum pull of 125 pounds;
the crossbow has a mechanical safety; and
the crossbow stock is not less than 25 inches in length.

Just my thoughts on this, and like everyone it's just an opinion, but since I've been a bowhunter many years and used both, I don't see the logic in this regulation, or reason for it other than to appease the elitist view when it comes to archery.

I think it's way passed the time for a change to this rule and let's just make them legal during all the bow season, and move on, instead of fighting amounst ourselves over something so minnial as what kind of equipment we use.

There I'm done!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I also agree with Jimbo. Crossbows are as quite as a compound bow(almost)and fling an arrow the same speed and distance as a compound.Only difference is when it's time to draw down on a deer or pig there's less movement to spook the animal with a crossbow.(although not much).Anything that helps recruit new hunters I'm all for it.Time to legalize for october use I say.Maybe I'm just burnt-out and bored with compounds after shooting one for over 25 years.

My dad hunted with a crossbow for the first time this year. He was on a bow only lease down in south texas, so he used a bow all season. For bow only season use he had to have a note from his doc about his shoulder injury. When rifle season opened up, it didn't matter.

He took an eight point on Christmas eve, and a nine point the other day.

He said he will not go back to a regular bow. He loves hunting with that crossbow now!!!
