I think people that refer to duckhunting as a sport are what's wrong with duckhunting.

I'd love to hear a logical explanation.

And btw, if 600ft is the legal distance all three groups were in violation. Whos going to defend breaking the law?

The issue is there is a discrepancy on legal distance. I have heard 600ft and 300ft from two wardens talking about the same lake. So who knows if they were legal or not. I guess it depends on who is on duty that day. Going by 600ft, they weren't legal.

All of Eric's posts are spot on, JMO. All you should expect from the public is for them to follow the law/regs. If the current law does not protect you, you need to work with your community and have it changed. If hunters are violating the law, call GW or police.

JMO, all these high pressure places, they should limit steel shot to #4, 3 inch. And 200 yards is way safe.

Anyone local knows what lake your talking about. When it was houses on wheels out there no one cared, now that there are houses on slabs folks are angry. Just a matter of time till there is no hunting allowed or it will be blind draw like Granbury

You got this same issue on many many many lakes in Texas, not just metromess lakes, lakes far away from the metromess as well. I always look on google earth for house/boat houses close to my hunting spots, google earth you can measure distance easy.

Seems legit to me, they were in the hunting zone. Don't see a problem

Kinda reminds me of the Native Americans. Our ancestors came and took over, and pushed them off to the side to make way for our ancestors best interests. Kinda lol

TDK and wfhunter make great points. This is just like the jackwagon dove hunters in Frisco that were legally justified in shootin x hundred yards from a school but it made no common sense and we all know how that turned out. I see Lavon and Lewisville and grapevine closed to hunting the the near future. We've been saying that about Lville for years!

Less than 20% of the population are hunters. If you think you can win by not showing common courtesy to the people around the lakes, you can keep doing what you are doing. But when the non hunters get fed up with it, and they get the laws changed, you can only blame yourself and your dumb azz friends. Then it might be that hunting will be confined to private property.

On my lake it's 600 feet from any private property LINE, not house, LINE.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

Give me a shell that can do damage @ 200 yards!!!! I'll buy a few cases! I kno what my shell is capable of ! And which direction to be shooting! Lack of knowledge and range could get some peeps in a predicament! I understand! But you won't be gettin a new roof anytime soon! You are dead wrong about this. I can personally introduce you to a young man that is blind in one eye from a 6 shot pellet fired from over 250 yards. He was on his dock on Eagle Mountain and the shot came from the middle of the reed island. I have watched trick shooters bust ballons from over 200 yards. Plus even if they are hunting on public land if their shot peppers a house they are breaking the law. A GW can sit at the OPs house and if one pellet lands on the property he can write a ticket to the hunters.

I sent one reply, but I don't know what happened to it. So I'll try again.
The sectional density combined with a shape factor results in a ballistic coefficent which is a measure of how a projectile travels through the air. Since all the pellets are assumed to be spherical, the SD should give an approximate value for comparison.
The NRA Fact Book (page 382) lists the SD for #3 steel as 0.0208, and 0.0210 for #7. The #3 lead has a SD of 0.0294.
The Lyman 5th lists the maximum horizontal distance for a #7 lead pellet with a MV of 1350 fps as 257 yards; it also lists a distance of 320 yards for a #3 LEAD. Although the 1 1/4 ounce load of #3 steel probably has a muzzle velocity of 1500 fps, it will slow down quite fast because of higher initial air resistance.
Based on the above info, I would estimate that the maximum horizontal distance of a #3 STEEL pellet would be about 250 yards. I would allow 300 yards for safety.
Just wanted to add this for doubters. Be careful out there.

I think you need to look at the correlation coefficient, when pellet is traveling at maximum valosity, and gravitational pull is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

Beside them peppering your house, which they should not, if you don't like them duck hunting so close to your house ...move.

I think you need to look at the correlation coefficient, when pellet is traveling at maximum valosity, and gravitational pull is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. I got this directly from NRA sources and SAMMI velocity tables on steel shot, not my work. But it is correct I can assure you. But then again the people that do the tests and calculations are not trying to justify how close they can hunt to someone or someone's house.
