Getting the touch down on the button is the key on the IR. It is easy to see that you can't appreciate the difference on a full moon night, though it still makes a significant difference. Once you get a dark night, that is where you'll see a huge difference. On the doubler... Some people like mag, some don't. Younger eyes tend to be able to do without it better than older eyes. The standard 4.6 on the scope is not enough for me at around 100 yards and above. The doubler allows me to be very accurate with this scope. I like the Photon XT....it is a good value. Took it out last night and man, the unv 20 ir was pretty impressive once I figured out the mount wasn't aligned properly with the xt. It was really dark and I could see the deer that always hang out next to my house at night. I need to set up yardage stakes to get an accurate measurement, but I'm guessing 150 and it was really clear. Glad to see you got your setup working well!

question, it was stated a few post back that the recon 325, and 550 paired well with a photon xt. are the two devices the same just different power levels. one 3 other 5, are thier any other things not the same, which would yall recommend for east texas pine woods. most my shots are under 100 yards. not far but i have 50 year old eyes i tend to like magification as i get older

Seems most are using un 201 .IR . Is this only one that will work with photon. Sure are there other options. See more than few on Unv websites

A lot of different illuminators work with the Photon XT. The UNV 20 IR has a very strong driver and 850 nm LED and can be both focused and dimmed, while most others don't have all of those features. Regardless, I would stay with an 850 nm illuminator for digital.

Once I figured it out, it was night and day. What has impressed me more than anything about the unit is seeing clearly with a doubler and no ir at all on bright nights. I figured going in you'd always have to use ir no matter the situation. It was a nice surprise.
Out to 150 with the doubler and the unv20 on a dark night is impressive. I can see farther than that, though, but past 150 it starts getting grainy/hazy-ish. Obviously the brighter the better.

.and on dark nights the onboard IR doesn't do much good...
Piney, if I read you correct, you are in an area that has a lot of trees and cover...and will be looking down narrow openings. This is one of the biggest challenges of any digital scope and IR. The growth will give you a lot of reflectivity and that makes it hard to see what is beyond. The best you can hope for in those situations is to focus the IR down and reduce the brightness by dimming. It takes some time to get it down and figure out how to make it work best. You cannot focus the onboard IR on the Photon. It dims, but is useless when it does. Closed in spaces are difficult for digital. Thermal works better in those situations.
The Photon XT is a nice starter scope to learn with and is actually amazing compared to what was available only a few years ago. I do know that availability is limited, but because demand is much, much lower than the X-Sight you don't hear about it.

I'm fortunate then. Where we hunt its mostly open hay/wheat fields with the woods close by. That's probably the reason I'm giving such good reviews so far, lol. But for $500 out of the box its still a cool tool.

I have one of these scopes and really like it but I would like additional magnification. What type of "doubler" are you guys using and where can it be purchased?

Seems a good external .IR that I can narrow my beam with will be my best bet. I can narrow my beam down lanes. May just use it and not onboard in those situations.

Got my Photon XT mounted and sighted in last weekend. Took it to the deer blind with me a few times and was very impressed for the money. An external illuminator is the ticket. I hunted a wheat field and had no problem scanning the entire field before sunrise and after sunset with the external illuminator. The feeder is at 177 yards and the farthest edge of the field is more than 300 yards.
Watched deer and raccoons compete over corn in the dark. Is the image quality the best? No. At 177 yards, I could tell bucks from does, but couldn't count points on the bucks. I could distinguish between a large 8 and a smaller buck. I tell you, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Maybe the objective cover problem has been solved, because mine is not going anywhere. It is a flip type cap, and honestly it is a little difficult to open at first and seems very secure to the scope.
I would actually like more zoom, so I will be interested in UNV's Doubler. It would definitely help with proper shot placement at 200yds.
For ease of use and functionality, I am extremely happy. After all, I bought this to chase hogs, and it will do that without an issue.

Now that I am thinking about it, with the objective cover I have, I don't know if it will come off to attach a Doubler. Bearclaw, do you know if there is a new lens cover now? I'll have to go home and look at mine, it just seem like it was on there really good if not permanently attached.
