I as good as the semi autos get accuracy wise... I don't understand why you would go bolt... .22 is about the only thing I can that about Because when shooting suppressed, a bolt action is a LOT quieter than a semi-auto.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

It would take me about an hour to open that up for a bull barrel. But I wouldn't do it to a carbine stock. How? Why not?

Savage Mark II. Here's a guy shooting .22LR at 344 yards at a 12" plate. I have the Savage Mark II FV-SR which is the black threaded barrel version. It would take me about an hour to open that up for a bull barrel. But I wouldn't do it to a carbine stock. How? Why not? A dowel wrapped with coarse sandpaper. Why not? The carbine stock doesn't have quite enough meat. I would get another stock.

Volquartsen components are top of the line....if not "the" top. Had Tom Volquartsen build me this one over 25 years ago, back before he became famous for his .22's. The rifle is capable of one hole groups at 100 yards using Eley Tennex ammo. Keep in mind that when discussing .22 rimfire accuracy, the gun is only half the equation.....the other half is the ammo. Tom cut the chamber to match the ammo I would be using in competition.  We enjoy shooting "flies" at 100 yards. Sprinkle Coke on a blank target and let the sugar dry, flies will land on the paper and be attracted to the dried sugar. A hit is when the bullet hole has bug blood around the edges. Amazing what we find to entertain ourselves.   To wring out that kind of accuracy from a 10/22 you'll need to spend some money on both the rifle and ammo. Best nail drivers I've found are the old Winchester model 52's....accuracy without any extra work needed.  have you priced some of the 52's? One in decent shape are bringing the money! My dad loves his like the one on the bottom, I like shooting the target version if my eyes weren't getting bad looking through peep sights.

You're right.....prices for 52's are right up there. Original Sporters are the most sought after. Glad I started collecting them years ago before they went wild.

It's true. I have pursued the elusive 100 yard 10/22 for many years. Them I bought my Win52. That dang gun will shoot automatch just as well as Wolf MT. At 100 yards. I don't understand why or what the difference is as my 10/22's will all put ten rounds in the same hole at fifty yards, but at 100 yards the pattern opens up.

It would take a month of Sundays to sand that much out of the channel manually. I'm sure it would eventually work but I thought there might have been a more efficient DIY method. There's plenty there, it would just look funny with the step at the front where no band would fit or be needed any longer I guess.

No way it's that hard. I use a (1"?) dowel with very coarse sticky back sandpaper. It cuts fast. Then switch to smoother grade for finish sanding. I think I've got one already done in my gun room.

For 100+ yrd accuracy you have to use subsonic (target) ammo to start with, as with HV .22LR the bullet will transition from super-sonic to sub-sonic (wobbling as it does) before hitting the target at 100+ yrds. Centerfires typically don't have this issue to contend with. Plus, as you have written, for extreme accuracy, the bolt-actions will always out-do the semi-auto's, all other things equal.
