Leaving for West Tx later today for some crane and geese and need some ammo help. Last week had major problems with winchester xpert 3" BB's in 3 different shotguns. All 3 shotguns have had cases and cases of ammo shot through by me and my B-I-L with zero hangups. Browning auto, Stoeger auto and a Mossberg pump. 50% missfires and the other 50% cycled SLOW or would not seat all the way. The pump jammed many times too and had to be field stripped 3 different times to get the spent shell out. Never had a problem with Winchester ammo ever but these sucked. Guess it could have been a bad batch, but I am ready to look at something else.

Recommendations for best crane/goose ammo?? Crane is going to be passover shots so I am breaking out the ol UltiMag for the 3.5in shell option.

Thinking of trying some Fasteel out. Is it good or bad?? Keep in mind my experience is limited only to winchester. Also don't want to break the bank either. Thanks for the help guys.

Fast steel is about all I shoot and its good stuff IMO. I know guys that buy it by the case and swear by it. I don't think you will be disapointed.

Ditto. I run Kent Fasteel exclusively unless I get in a bind for ammo away from home and have to buy whatever I can get my hands on.

Cool thanks I'll give Kent a try. I don't know about my B-I-L but my guns are cleaned after each day of shooting. So whatever was happening was due to the ammo(I think). 1st shot was a missfire for me and the second cycled slow and never seated. Then pretty much followed that same pattern the rest of the hunt. I have never ran anything bigger than #2 through it, so it could be the gun just don't like it, but for 3 different brand guns makes you think the ammo was bad. Either way I know the UltiMag loves them BBB's (but not my shoulder so much lol) so it'll get a workout this weekend.

Quick ? since I am in the middle of packing... Does Academy carry Kent? Cabelas is a little out of the way and Gander will be closed by the time I am pulling into town.

You have to goto Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's to get Kent shells.

Also, I didn't know before but I found out on this forum that you can use lead shot for sandhill cranes.

If you are hunting geese the same time as cranes, you probably want to use only steel shot. That way there could be no potential confusion with a game warden.

If you hunt cranes first, I would use lead shot, not shoot at geese, then go put the lead away for the goose shoot.

Thought about that Moose, but the little playa lake we found is jammed pack with cranes and geese. I would have a hard time passing any ducks or geese up. Gonna go the steel route just to be safe.

If the GW finds any lead on you or in your truck, you will get fined, no if's ands or but's about it. (while goose hunting)

I bought 3 boxes of fast steel yesterday @ bass pro. Today was only the 2nd time I have ever hunted with it and I was very impressed. Probably gonna replace win experts permanently with fast steel.

misfire could be from a bad batch of primers, maybe a worn firing pin ? just some ideas
