My 13 yr old daughter has been hunting for four years now. She's shot deer before but has passed on several young bucks in years past. 5-6 yr old 147" 8 pt! Saying that I'm proud is an understatement.
We kept it as a pet for several months until it got run over by a truck. Then we ate him.

The young lady may hunt for a long time before she kills one better than that one. Congrats!

outstanding! Congrats to the huntress & her guide. What part of Oklahoma? CB SW Oklahoma. This ranch is near Eldorado. Drought is still pretty severe around here with many areas missing all or most of an entire age class (3.5 yrs) of deer. The next several will be particularly difficult looking for mature deer, so I'm sure glad she got him!! Kevin

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement! I just showed her your comments and she was excited to read them. Kennedy is 13 now (it's kind of hard to wrap my mind around that) and she's been hunting since she was 8. Her first hunting trip was to a high fenced operation when she was 9. My thinking was that it's kind of like hooking a kid on fishing...take them to a pond full of perch so that they've got a pretty good chance of success. She was able see lots of cool animals and to harvest a Corsican ram and I've never seen her so excited. She was hooked. After teaching her what I have learned about quality deer management, she decided that she was going to wait for an older mature buck for her first one. She's had the freedom to shoot whatever she likes and It's been a long and patient ride, especially with the drastic effect of FAR fewer deer that this historic drought has had on our part of SW Oklahoma and she passed on some good but young deer. This "old toppie" like my South African friend likes to call them was not immune to letting his guard down during the rut. We had two young bucks with what I'm sure was a hot doe in front of us for about 30 minutes. I had sprayed buck bomb estrus out of our blind when we arrived that morning because I've seen it work before. I was hoping that a big one would come along to kick their butts and steal their date! This buck came from downwind...my best guess is that he caught a whiff of that stuff, came in to investigate and found his new girlfriend. After a slow and careful window opening, Kennedy lined up,on this buck. She the said, "daddy, I'm scared!"... Buck fever and she didn't want to miss. After settling in, she sent a 100gr .243 right where she needed to. She was the most excited little girl in Jackson County at about 8:00 that morning...jumping up and down, pigtails bouncing! And her cousin, Zoe who,is from Houston who had never been hunting before was right there ready to learn how to do this stuff too! It's a morning and experience I hope she'll never forget. I know I wont. And she won't let me put it in my home office either. well, I asked...
We kept it as a pet for several months until it got run over by a truck. Then we ate him.
