While hunting you see a nice typical 8 or 10 pt.; at what point scorewise/sizewise does he generally have to be for you to go "green light" and drop the hammer?

You gotta consider where you are. Except for the real blind-luck, usually nocturnal and for some reason you happen to catch him buck, do they really get any bigger in your area? What size is your property? Do the neighbors shoot anything with horns?
I passed up a roman nose, sway belly, hard, thick eight recently. I'm still kicking myself.
Full disclosure: I don't know squat about "scoring" and I doubt I'll ever have any interest in learning.
If your heart rate goes up when you see him, that's a green light.

To me it's in the eyes of the hunter (beholder)

To me it's in the eyes of the hunter (beholder) Your choice, if it's legal and you want to shoot it, shoot it. One man's trophy is another's cull. One man's cull is another's trophy.

If I have to think about or contemplate whether to shoot or not, I don't pull the trigger. I should have to go straight to my earplugs and gun.

First I have to know he's old enough
An 8 that is gonna push 140 is gonna get my attention, same with a 150" or better 10
If I'm in the hill country, I'll take a serious look at any mature buck
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If I'm in the hill country, I'll take a serious look at any mature buck Pretty much my thoughts too assuming maturity; I'll even go 135 or better on an 8. Just curious as to that area for most..

If I know the ranch can produce good deer I'll hold out for a decent buck. If its a marginal property I'll take any mature one. As far as location, I know low fence ranches in blanco and mason county where I won't shoot unless the deer is 140" or better. Some places in atascosa I wouldn't shoot unless it was over 160" There are some places in the golden triangle where I'm wasting my time if I'm looking for something over 130"

I've taken about 20 mature bucks over 5 states in the past decade. In that time I've gone through progression's in what I'm looking for. At some point I've specifically waited for 12 points, typical, dark horns and so on but I've never shot a buck based on score unless you count my 178" Missouri buck that I saw and thought holy hey! Bang!

DQ, when your pulse quickens...line up for the shot...otherwise, pass on the opportunity...I routinely used to go look over every buck on the property (and some passing through) then decide which one I wanted to pursue afterwards...this process is NOT for the faint of heart...occasionally by "looking at all them first" I would occasionally see "THE ONE" that made my pulse quicken and just take the shot...the benefit to this type of hunting is that it doesn't matter what "STAGE" of hunting maturity you are in, you will take a buck that will satisfy you...Hope this information Helps...

If the buck is mature and doesn't look like he's going to get much better, I'll take him regardless of what he scores as long as he's legal. Of course, if I'm after a bigger buck that I have game camera photos of or have seen already, I'm not going to shoot a different buck under the above situation.
If you're going to be proud of a buck then take him. You're opinion, not somebody else's, is what matters.

What the heck is a Roman Nose. I would love to see a picture It usually a buck that has had his nose broken a time or two. Causes a hump or Roman nose between his eyes and tip of his nose. Can happen to any age buck but more than likely in an older buck that is mature.

Hill country -135 8pt 145 10pt
Panhandle 140 8pt. 155 10pt
That's my general rule but really depends on age and frame.

Well, where I hunt now is so small of acreage, I will take what looks to be good for here on 15 acres. Seems 90% have been what IMO are "culls". older and some younger bucks that I would expect more from, or show something I don't like (like a 4-5 yoa 6pnt.. On a lease, or larger property, would probably be the same for me.

Can happen to any age buck but more than likely in an older buck that is mature. Seen pics of them but never had a buck on my place with one. Seen 8.5+ yr old bucks without them. A broken nose explains it. For sure wouldn't hold out on a mature deer if he didn't have the "roman nose." I'll shoot any deer that makes me happy. To really get me going they need to be 130+ and mature.

For me… If I need to study him to try and convince myself he’s a shooter then he’s not the buck for me. If I find myself reaching for my rifle instead of my binos there is no doubt he's the one I’m after.
