Alright guys, I am about as green as it gets when it comes to bird hunting. I was fortunate enough to dove hunt this year for the first time and I fell in love with it. Bird hunting has always interested me way more than deer hunting.
Now I have the opportunity to duck hunt this season and I was hoping you guys could give me some good ol starter tips. Not looking on locations or anything just stuff to get started.
I have an A300 for my gun. All i know about ammo is I should probably be shooting 3 inch non lead shells, I think 4 shot? (just an assumption from reading here). I need some cold weather camo since all i have is stuff from dove season. I looked at academy the other night and picked some stuff out i think will work. I don't have any details on if ill need waders or anything, if i can go without buying them I will, just to save on cost.
I know what the common ducks are, mallards, teal, wood ducks...I semi know what they look like when flying (especially mallards) since i watch the sky a lot more now when I'm fishing. Do you have a website or link to anything that shows duck ID? I looked on TPWD earlier today and couldn't really find anything other than geese and cranes...
Sorry for the long random post, just looking for some help fellas!

Ducks.org has waterfowl ID. If you have a smart phone, they have a pretty great app with waterfowl ID, also.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

Just shoot it and ground check it. If you still don't know what you shot post it on here. These hall monitors over here would be glad to help and share with friendly conversation over the deceased fowl

if you aren't comfortable with ID, or have bad light conditions, it's always helpful to know you can legally kill one of anything, and 2 of most. If you ground check a mottle or canvasback, you have to make sure that's what you're not seeing next time. same with mallard hens, reds, etc when you get 2... Lots of Texas guys watch redheads and pintails fly by after they have 2 in the bag.

Lots of Texas guys watch redheads and pintails fly by after they have 2 in the bag. This is what I did when I had just begun. I would watch them fly in shoot two and ground check, if it was ducks that you could shoot six of then I would shoot two more.

Hmm, never met a duck hunter that didn't need waders... I think some people would call those "clients".
