So my Wife gave me the ok to head out to the Lease on Friday because she knows how excited I am about opening of rifle season but I have some reservations. She said she wont be mad but she will "judge Me". I mean I have a two about to be three year old son and I dont know if Halloween trick or treatin is necessarily one of those must makes. I could go Saturday at 3 am and make them both but then I will be exhausted and may not enjoy as much.. What's a dad to do?

Family time trumps hunting IMO. If I were in your shoes I would go Saturday at 3 am, happy wife, happy life!

With two boys grown and out of the house - I'd give my life for a night of trick or treating with them. Stay home Friday night - a 0300hrs wake up is nothing.

In 20 years, you'll thank me.

I am heading out late Sat morning with my boy. He wants to go to a party with friends Friday night. I enjoy Halloween and the friends I'll be with so am good with it. I have enough hunts for the next three months on the calendar.

We're trick or treating and doing the haunted house Friday night. Then me and the boy are headed out early Saturday morning.

I agree family first, when I have to choose between hunting and the boys football games it's an easy decision.

Yup.

Hunt the morning until noon, go to camp, eat, and take a nap until 2 or 3, get back out in the afternoon. Take it froma Fireman that is always woken up in the middle of the night and has to function the next day. A nap will help tremendously. I will be on duty Friday and will, hopefully get relieved early Saturday morning so I can drive to my land 70 miles away. I don't care if I'm up all night Friday I will be hunting Saturday.

Yeah, chances are if you're asking, you already know the right answer. I'm in the same boat.

What I did, buy him a bag of candy and take him to the deer lease with you. Problem solved. I had mine with me from 18 months on, diaper bag in one hand, gun in the other. Once he started walking there were no questions asked about Halloween or hunting, and he is still hunting and choosing to hunt over all else (besides baseball) 14 years later. She will get over it and if she don't there are others that will.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

First, this statement should be your first definite clue, and second, kids only grow up once...

I'm missing opening and driving 200 miles for my new grandson's first trick or treat. I can hunt anytime.

I dont sleep well the night before opener anyways. If I get 4 hours of sleep im doing good. If your on a lease then you shouldnt have a problem. If she starts using the kid card weekend after weekend then you gotta put the foot down.

My wifes trying to make me feel bad because she has to hand out candy herself this year. Being its on a Friday it will probably be busy. Kids are grown, in mid 20's, so i did my time. Do the right thing.

You'll never get back missed time with your kids, no matter what. Stay, go trick or treating, get up early and go hunt

I say get up and go early Saturday. I've got the 6-1/2 year old and the 3 year old (as of this coming Wednesday) all geared up to be walking through the airport and riding on the airplane in their Halloween costumes Friday night so we can go hunting Saturday morning. We should get to the ranch about 2:00 Saturday morning and we will head up the hill about 6:00...we can nap before the evening hunt!!! I am lucky and get to do both...If I were in your shoes I would be trick or treating then haulin tail to the woods!

Why even ask this question? Go trick or treating with your family. Never get that time back if you don't. Suck it up buttercup and leave early Saturday morning. Can rest after the first hunt of the morning.

You mentioned that the wife wouldn't be mad at you, but she would judge you.

With that being said, some people say that they would rather be judged by one than carried by six. I'm here to tell you, if that one judge is a wife, there are many people who would rather be carried out by six. An angry wife can make your life miserable for much longer than a deer season smile

Spend time with the family, enjoy the moment, then drive to the lease after they crash for the night.

leave at 3:00 am or leave after the kid(s) are settled into bed following trick or treating ... simple ... just be sure you pack and check your list twice well beforehand.

I'm going trick or treating, have the kiddo in bed in his normal 9ish time frame, may push it to 10 so he'll sleep until 9 for his Gramms....and going hunting on Sat morning. Somewhere in there he's getting on his cow costume and being thrown out in the pasture with the real cows for pictures.

A 2.5 yr old knows what TorT is? If it's that big a deal, and apparently it is to Mom, then do it and go to the lease at 0300.

Kids first! Go after the TorT. You don't ever get those moments back once you miss them. They are TOO precious! I am a Pawpaw now and told my son he would not come to the lease until after he took his son T or T and he had no gripes at all.
