After many animals downed by my wife we finally recovered a bullet. She shoots the Federal Fusion 140g out of her 7-08. Last night she took a large pig at 178 yards and broke both shoulders taking out the heart in between. The bullet was lodged in the offside hide. I just put it on the scales after boiling and cleaning it and it weighed 126.4g out an original 140g. Id say that's impressive. And of course congrats to my wonderful wife again. Pics in a minute.

I've shot several animals with the 7-08 and they were all DRT. Good job! Congrats to your wife!
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

That's the caliber and bullet my wife shoots. She's taken two hogs so far with hers, both one shot kills at 150 yards. The distance from our blind to the feeder. I'm a big fan of Federal ammo and have been shooting it in my 30-06 for a very long time. I was reloading, but got tired of that and spent my time shooting the different factory loads to find the one that gave me the best accuracy. Federal won hands down!!!

Ya' know, I was wondering about the Fusion myself. I couldn't find the loads my .270 WSM used to shoot which was the Winchester hollow point in a 130 gr.
I got some Fusion soft points in 150 gr. and I saw how much I liked them at the range yesterday, and inch high at 100 yards, a click higher at 200 yards. I hope the expansion will be devastating , never shot them

I'm sure they are fine bullets for medium-sized game but am not sold on them for elk. My brother shot an elk in Wyoming on the point of the shoulder with a 180 grain Fusion in .30-06. The elk was not recovered. I could not believe it-a better shot would have been behind the shoulder but the range was only 100 yards or so. Obviously penetration was not achieved.

Well the guide was watching the shot through his binoculars and said that's where the dust flew off when the bullet impacted. My brother had a good rest and has hunted for over 45 years. The elk ran over a little knoll and they were already in celebration mode. So I'm satisfied with the recitation of events. He is not an elk hunter and I do think his experience shooting deer hurt him and the shot should have been placed differently. But all in all I was disappointed in the outcome.

No intent to argue and I have no idea how they would perform on elk but an unrecovered animal is no statement to bullet performance.

No intent to argue and I have no idea how they would perform on elk but an unrecovered animal is no statement to bullet performance. Don't see how you can make that blanket assessment. It may be a factor-it may not. Depends on the situation. Since everyone seems to read me wrong so often, I'll spell out what I am saying: 1)The shot placement should have been better-that's on my brother; and 2)IMO the bullet selection could have been better too. In fact, I strongly advised him to use a Barnes X or other similarly constructed bullet (I named several to him). He had confidence in the fusions and chose to use them. That's on him too. So I am not trying to blame an unrecovered elk solely on the bullet-but I am convinced it was a factor even though the responsibility for any unrecovered animal is always on the shooter. Again, the shooter both places the shot (good or bad) and chooses the bullet to use (good or bad). So the responsibility is always on the shooter. (As an aside, even though he could have certainly continued to hunt and likely killed an elk, he refused to hunt anymore knowing the elk he shot more than likely was mortally wounded from the shot even though it was not recovered.)

Hey I don't read you wrong. In fact I generally agree with your post in the OT. Just saying you are disscounting a bullet that you have no idea where it hit. You said obviously no exit but I say obviously no idea. Come on, buck fever (elk) may have overcome him. I've yet to not suffer from it.

Don't see how you can read the posts above and say I "have no idea where it hit" though..... And I didn't say anything about exit one way or another-though I presume penetration was poor and there was none. But obviously I can't prove anything since the animal was not recovered.

I think the Fusion is fine but don't ask it too penetrate a lot of bone. A bullet like the Fusion that is designed to open up on whitetails can't be expected to penetrate the thickest bone of an mature elk. A point of the shoulder shot a couple a couple of inches low needs to penetrate a lot of bone.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Enough about hit or mis. I do believe that your wife needs to wear some type gloves. Pigs have diseases. Any cuts or scrapes on hands could get infected, plus it's easy to remove the gloves to go to the Jon.

I would be pretty disappointed to not find an elk I shot in the shoulder at 100 yds with ANY .30 cal 180 gr bullet other than a hollow point.

I was not able to get the Fusion in 30-06 to pattern worth a flip out of my gun. I went back to the trusty ole cor-lokt and never looked back. Glad it works for you though. Congrats to your wife and thank you for sharing.

I have had good luck with the Federal Fusions on most game in my 7mag and 338 win mag. Congrats on a nice hog, but I always wear gloves when it comes to cleaning swine.

I'm most impressed that his wife cleans and skins her own pigs! That's a keeper I bought a couple boxes of fusion for my 6.8spc. Hope to have a report on performance on hogs this weekend.
