Pick the tool for the job, but each rifle can do the job of another.
I wouldn't try the small one to do the job of the big one, and vise versa, but the middle one can do it all. It's just a hoss to haul around.

Depends on where I'm going, terrain, box blind or still hunting and the distance of shots - up close in deep cover or open ground ?? expected @ what kind of critters expected for targets.
Always have a SS/syn & a wood/blue on hand for weather changes.
Current shooters include: 9.3x62 CZ American wood/blue @ 10lbs, 300WSM wood/blue Fwt@ 8 3/4lbs, 270 T3 ss/syn @ 7lbs , 260 SAKO M85 Hunter Grade @ 8 1/4lbs, and the new toy is a 308 T/C Venture Weathershield/syn @ 7 3/4lbs that still needs to be worked up and should be ready to go when the planned hunt in Archer & Young counties in January gets here. Savage model 99 in .250 savage I guess. Don't hunt with it anymore, but if my 111 malfunctioned, or broke I guess I'd go back to the 99.

I currently do not have a backup hunting rifle, or rather I do have a backup but it needs a new barrel.
Hunting rifle is an 1885 Winchester in 270 WSM.
Backup that needs a barrel is a custom 98 Mauser, currently 30-06 and will probably have the new barrel in the same chambering. Present barrel is badly corroded, suppose a former owner shot cheap surplus ammo and did not hose out the barrel afterward. - He saved some bucks on the ammo and destroyed the guns accuracy.
Kind regards, charlesb

My back up is a Marlin 30-30, open sights. Sighted in @ 50 yrds. It rides around with me on the ready. It has come in handy jumping animals on the buggy and I carry it when I am trailing a wounded critter for someone. Love a 30-30 in the brush country. I've never carried a scoped rifle as a back up.

Backup is my old (1 owner since 1979) Rem 788, .243 95gr Hornady Superformance. Hope to have my niece take her first deer with it this weekend here in Mills county. Just rolled into town about 45 minutes ago.

Depends what I feel like grabbing out of the safe and what/where I am hunting. Lately I grab the Weatherby .308 for deer and the 300blk for pigs. Either will work in the other's place for most of my deer/pig hunts. The choices change every few years. It has a lot to do with what gun(s) have I bought recently, which scopes have been checked lately to make sure they are sighted in, and which do I have the most confidence shooting.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

If your hunting requires you to fly to far-off destinations, a back up rifle--with it's extra weight--will likely cost you some nasty baggage fees. A better idea is to carry a back up scope which has rings attached that are compatible with the bases on your rifle. Then if a mishap occurs--and it's more likely to involve your optics rather than your gun--you only need to swap out with the new scope. IME, if you use Weaver-style or Picatinny bases, the new scope will go on with at least a 1.5" repeatability. Obviously, you will want to recheck your zero as soon a practicable.
If you are driving and the extra weight of a rifle is not a problem, your back up gun should ideally be chambered for the same cartridge as your primary gun. This way, you don't have to haul along extra ammo too.
"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple.....and wrong." H. L. Mencken

I don't call it a backup rifle. I call them "the one the girl is going to get" and "the one the boy is going to get" when I kick the bucket. .308 R700 for the boy, 260 Ruger for the girl.

Depends on what the 'primary' rifle is. I have two 25-06's that go quite often, a 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 2 243's and a couple more. Building a 358 win that I hope to dust something with this year as well. Might even grab my Grandfather's 1905-made Model 94 in 30 Winchester and give it a try again. After all, I did take a turkey with his 1914-made Model 97 this year
