Hey guys, a young kid new to Texas hunting. Really enjoy reading all the posts and seeing all the great deer around the state! I got a lease in Sweetwater (250 acres) and have set up some feeders and cams. I live in Dallas (drafted by the Cowboys in '12, injuries have caused me to take some time off of football, but gives me time to hunt). I purchased the Bushnell HD Wireless Cam because its a 4 hour drive, and have been having a pretty decent buck come in regularly (along with plenty of hogs). I'm from Washington State and my Grandpa lives in Montana so this down South hunting is pretty exciting for me. Getting my Dad down here for a Thanksgiving hunt (he doesn't know yet). Thanks for any advice and good luck to y'all. Really fun to get on every morning and read all the forums. I'll post some pics of the buck. The guy with the lease last year took a big 158 class buck. Because it's the wireless cam, the quality isn't great.

I'm originally from Sweetwater. Some dang nice deer around there. Hunted around there most of my life. Good luck and get you some ms Allen's chicken when your in town.

Welcome to the forum. Some good deer around Fisher and surrounding counties. Read up on 'antler rattling', it can work wonders in west Texas, especially early in the season.

Thanksgiving should be pretty close to some prime time rut activity around there! Good luck, let us know how it goes. Rattling during the rut is one of my favorite things. I usually rattle late mornings, between 9 & 11. Some days you may not rattle up anything, but there are times where I've had numerous bucks come running within 10-15 minutes of a rattle sequence. Just make sure & have a rifle ready, they will cruise by pretty quick a lot of times and I've missed opportunities because I wasn't ready.

Thanks everyone. Ya I had a rough couple years injury wise but am getting healthy again. Maybe too soon actually, my agent wants me to go to Baltimore for a workout in a couple weeks but I want to finish out hunting season. I might have to say my back is still sore for a little bit longer .. thanks again guys.

^^^^ THIS! Just don't eat there the day you have to drive back to Dallas. I hunted south of Sweetwater (Lake Sweetwater area) for 30 years. Thanksgiving weekend was always Big Buck Weekend. Rut was full on and I always got my nice bucks the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Eastern Washington Univ. is a great Sub-bowl Division program and I'd always heard you were a ball hawk MJ. Know that Bo Levi Mitchell landed out there after leaving SMU and had some good success.
