I had and shot a T/C Hawken many years ago. Got rid of it for some reason and I am now getting back into shooting black powder. I just purchased a real nice Cabelas/Investarms 50 cal carbine and I am now looking to start finding the perfect hunting load. In my T/C I was shooting 90 gr. of fff behind a 358? buffalo bullet. I have not shot the new type sabots and I am thinking of trying the same load or maybe a little lighter in the new rifle. Any suggestions?

Thanks, looking forward to the smell of the old soap and water clean. Wife isn't though. fun part tis shooting. cleaning is nasty smelling, some one gotta do it. U choot a hog with a muzzy, & it charge, U better know the two-step their is some big disadvantages ta muzzle loading. ta those who have posted pic's in the past.

Patched round balls are fun and inexpensive to shoot. Depending on the twist rate of your gun, saboted bullets may or may not group well. My Lyman Trade Rifle really likes PRB's and conicals...it's a 1:48 twist. Bought it as a .54 cal and later bought the .50 cal barrel for it. Enjoy shooting both calibers.
Good luck with your gun. Have fun and be safe.

The more I read the more I am leaning towards PRB's. Like some said cheap and just as fun and will also let the air out of animals. Mine is a 1;24 I believe. Looking forward to the fun.

You need to shoot a bullet that matches your barrels twist rate. I believe for the sabots they recommend a 1 in 28. Check to see what your twist rate is (not the barrel length but the twist rate). You need a fast twist rate to stabilize a sabot.
