What's the best approach to hunting hogs after dark. I've spent the last several weekends deer hunting and throwing corn on the ground just to find it all gone the next morning when I show up to my stand. It's pretty obvious that's it's hogs eating the corn, and we have several game cams with hogs in the pics, but they only seem to move at night. I've tried hitting them with a spotlight, but they just scatter when the light hits them. I've heard others say to use a lantern, and hang it from a feeder. Does this work? I'm going to try and get a hog or two this weekend, and I would like to find a way to hunt them after dark. I would like to get in the stand late in the evening and stay until I get one. BTW, this weekend is a full moon, and the weatherman says it should be clear and cold Saturday night. The forecast is currently calling for 29 degrees Saturday night. Any ideas?

They make special lights that can be set up at your feeder I believe, designed for night hog hunting.

I had wondered about the little solar powered side walk lights that folks use around their houses.

Attach 2 of those to each leg of your feeder and that should provide enough light to be able to see to shoot by.

Also a red or an amber lense for your spotlight might work.

Just some ideas.

As CH mentioned...try a red lens. And don't shine the light right on them. Try to shine it down on them or to the side, giving just enough light to see to make the shot.
We sit in the dark until we hear them. Ready your gun, then click on the light. You won't have but a few seconds before they start freakin out, so you have to be fairly quick. However, we have had the rest of the herd come right back a few minutes after the 1st shot.
We also make a night of it by baiting out a few holes, or rotating feeders.

fowlplayr, I have a red lens attachment that will fit over my spotlight. I could give it a try. How far away from the holes do ya'll set up? My feeder is about 75 yards from my stand. I'm not sure the spotlight would reach that far or not. How do ya'll bait for them? Is there something that's better than fresh corn? What seems to be their preference?

We usually use corn, but occasionally we'll use the molasses stuff and corn. One doesn't really seem to be any better than the other.
I set up as close as I can without being in the big middle of them.
If we have baited a road, we'll park the truck a hundred or so yards away and walk right up on them before we turn the light on.

got some buddies in East Texas that sit just a few yards from the bait stations and use 00buckshot on 'em.

It seems to me that a motion-activated red light RIGHT AT THE FEEDER might be very effective. That way, every time the hogs came up to the feeder, the light would come on and they would become accustomed to feeding under it.

Sounds like something to try. Can you get one that's battery powered?

I have 2 solar powered motion lights on some corn I pour on the ground. The hogs and the deer don't mind the light coming on. I have shot about 15 hogs in the same spot right behind my house.

Hawglite.com They make one for your bow or gun.

Hunting is more to me than Antlers on the wall. It's more about the memories you make, and sharing those memories with friends, and family.

We use an amber/yellow colored lens. Doesnt seem to spook them as much. White spooks them a lot & red does some also. As for lights on/off/around the feeder. They will eventually get used to them.

Dont directly shine the light at them, hold off to a side or just above or below them. Wont spook them as fast.

That is what we use. We bought a set that came with 3 lights and the solar panel for about $30. One light on each leg of the feeder and when we go out there we put some corn/jello right where the light will shine. Then they have to walk right up to the light to eat. Since the lights are on every night they seem to be used to them.

I have the solar "spot" landscape lights on all of our feeders. A full moon is the ticket though, especially if it's clear. I got two and missed a third on the full moon last month, in an hour's time. I also spread a little corn between my stand and the feeder. The one I missed was in a pack of about 10 that were eating that corn closer to the stand. I usually just take a few drinks and some snacks to the stand and plan to be there all night on the full moon. They usually catch me sleeping, but I can't sleep through all of the noise they make so it doesn't matter if I get a few winks in.

I found like tgail mentioned the dolar landscape lights at lowes for @@.00 have owrked great for us. I placed to to each feeder in opposite direction and neither the hogs nor deer fear them.
